Sabrina has made a new friend, a black cat. Rumor around the town is that he is bad luck. When things start happening around here including a murder, she has to start to wonder. Determined to not let the superstition be real she steps in for helping to find the killer. A quick read that keeps you turning pages to the end.

While I was provided a copy of this book for free, the opinions are strictly my own.

Almost 40 year old woman quits her job, mooches off of her elderly aunt. She is handed opportunities to become an author, by scheduling a meeting with an agent, instead of working on her book she ignores it. She is upset with the friend that helps her get the meeting for telling her to focus on her job because that’s how privilege works. She gets the chance to be an author and keeps mooching from the elderly.
Thought the mystery was good but the main character was a privileged grown woman brat. She expected the sheriff to get her family off and gets upset when the deputy is doing her job. Even if the deputy doesn’t like you, be a grown up and deal with it. She sounded like a 16 year old high school kid in a lot of her complaining. I’ll read the next one because I enjoyed the mystery, hopefully the author makes the almost 40 year old into an adult.

It took a bit for me to get into the story in the beginning. A bit hiccup-py, but it gained momentum and I ended up loving it. I think this might be the first mystery I've read where the main character is a mystery writer. The setting is Hill Country in Texas, where I'd live if I were to ever move to the Lone Star State.
Sabrina moves home to Lavender, a small-ish town, to help her aunt recover from a fall and to finally decide if she is a writer or not. There is murder, her aunt is accused, Sabrina investigates. There's a good sheriff, a jealous deputy and a slew of suspects. All very viable suspects. I really liked how Sabrina got involved and stuck to it.
Eye-widening finale. I did not see that one coming...and I like when that happens.
Then there's the black cat. What a character in and of himself. Several in the town are scared of him, some want to trap him. They think he's bad luck. Sabrina knows that common sense should tell people that there's no such thing. She takes the cat in, names him Hitchcock. He's ornery and a sweetie.
I can definitely recommend this book and author. I really look forward to reading more in the series.

Good story line with lots of interesting characters. Really liked Tyanne and Sabrina and Hitchcock the cat. Looking forward to seeing more of Luke in future books. Liked the mystery -- was he her brother? what was going on in his life? What about the other dead body found years ago? Nice tie up that I did not expect.

Sabrina has quit her job as a paralegal and gone to her Aunt Rowena in Lavender, Texas, to help her take care of her cottages that she rents to visitors since her aunt fell and broke her leg. Sabrina is trying to write a book, but so far has only rejections, then her friend Tyanne, who owns a bookstore sets up a meeting with an agent for Sabrina to meet with about her latest book she is writing. But Bobby Joe Flowers turns up, a good-for-nothing cousin of Rowena's and Sabrina's dad. He clalims that he is probably Rowena's half-brother and has a half-share in the cottages she owns. Rowena clobbers him with her crutch. Then Sabrina finds Bobby Joe dead by the river when she decides she needs to do some baking to help her concentrate that night. A black cat has shown up in town that everyone claims is El Diablo Gato, that brings bad luck. Sabrina tries to adopt the cat and names him Hitchcock, but others in the town are looking to trap it and get rid of it. On top of that, her aunt is prime suspect in Bobby Joe's murder. Sabrina is desperately searching for other suspects and is convinced the killing is somehow tied to the death of a girl in that same area of the river years ago. She is so busy with the search for suspects and trying to save the cat, that she's having trouble getting her plot lined out for the novel and the meeting with the agent.

Wasn’t a bad start to a series. There was just a lot going on, a lot of characters and a lot to keep track of. Hoping I enjoy book two more and can follow along easier.
