It was fun to be back in the Buffy-verse with a slayer of the new generation. It picks up in continuity with the end of the TV show, that the slayer power is unlocked for lots of women and girls and that the hellmouth in Sunnydale is ... boarded up.

But then there's an attack at SlayerPalooza (well, they call it slayerfest, but I think mine is better), and all of a sudden Willow's daughter (?! -- yeah, they explain that) seems to be manifesting powers. Well, new powers, because of course she's Willow's daughter.

Frankie (Mini-Red) accumulates her support staff, and starts patrolling, because guess what, vampires are moving in again and ruining the neighborhood.

There's a starter demon, two truly ancient demons, help from unexpected quarters, and a decent approximation of the banter from the original series. And yet. I'm glad someone is in this sandbox creating new stories. I have no idea what the timeline is on this story though -- it didn't feel like a whole school-year passed. It feels like it only took two weeks, which is not a lot of time from "brand new slayer" to "taking down an ancient evil." I suppose more will be revealed in the next book, which I may or may not read...

Fans of the Buffy-verse, unite! We have a new story to sink our teeth into!

Blake brings glimpses of Buffy and her Scooby Gang in this latest addition to the infamous vampire slayer's universe, while also introducing fans to new characters who are picking up the slack -- and their stakes -- to carry on the slaying tradition. Frankie, Hailey, Jake, and Sigmund are the newest generation of demon fighters, thrown together in a fashion very similar to the original series. Fans of the Buffy series will appreciate the nods to the past while Willow, Oz, and Spike lead this youngest group of fighters in the battle to save Sunnydale - and the world - yet again.

A tragedy at the latest slayer retreat brings evil back to Sunnydale, including a big-new-bad looking to capitalize on a protector-less feeding ground. When Frankie, who at this point only knew the "eco-magic" her mother Willow taught her, realizes she's the newest slayer, it turns her world upside down. Frankie feels inadequate in the shadow of her hero, "Aunt" Buffy, and begins to buckle under the immense pressure of living up to her watcher, Spike's, expectations while keeping her friends and the entire town of Sunnydale safe from monsters she's only ever heard about in her mom's stories. Fans will enjoy the humor and the famous Buffy-verse sarcasm, the action-packed fight scenes, some warm and fuzzy feelings between humans and demons, and the "easter eggs" of past plots while new readers of the series will be able to dive into and enjoy the story regardless of their "Buffy knowledge". There's something for everyone in this book and I, for one, am so glad I got to read it. Can't wait for the next one!

I cannot express to you how much this book surprised me with how fun it was, I was expecting a half baked legacy sequel to a show that I have mixed opinions of at best. But then this book said "here's a still bitchy but domesticated Spike as a Watcher, a nerd slayer, and a tighter friend group of potential scoobies" and I said "say more right now!" bonus points for calling out Angel several decades after the fact and Jomps Wobbin-ism without the guilt! I had a fun time, and it's promising that I checked out the sequel immediately after finishing this.
