I have to say I didn’t know if I was going to like this because I didn’t know if I like Maggie Stiefvater. I know everyone else loves her Wolves of Mercy Falls series but I have only read the first one and it was “meh” for me. (I posted my review of it before this one). But, man! This was so awesome. There was so much depth to the story, her mythology, her settings, and her characters. I felt like I knew each deep down on a level I haven’t known in another story.
Maggie’s story-telling was impecable. I really think the way she wrote her settings, like the festival of the Scorpio Races, is what sets her apart from the Wolves of Mercy Falls series (at least the first book) as well as most other YA novelists. I felt like I was there and that I knew what everyone was feelings. It’s incredible.

This is an amazing book, it paints a picture and draws you in. It feels like you are racing alongside them and feeling what they are.
Once again, another Maggie book where I stopped highlighting beautiful lines because the whole book would be yellow. Love you Sean Kendrick. Love you Puck. Love you Dove. What a perfect cast and setting and mood and everything 5 🌟

Really enjoyed this book! Love, love the concept of taking a real legend about water horses and turning it into a story. I just would have liked some loose ends tied up. For example, why does Gabe want to leave the island? This comes up again and again as a mystery, yet is never explained. There is also some crass humor.

This book was well-written and the premise was intriguing, but the pacing was very slow and I had trouble getting pulled into the world of Thisby and its water horses. I struggled to relate to the motivations of the characters; Puck’s initial decision to race didn’t really make sense to me, and Mutt’s evilness seemed disproportionate to anything Sean or his dad had ever done to him. And why in the world is anyone even living on this miserable island full of man-eating horses???
I did enjoy watchingPuck and Sean’s relationship grow, and I liked some of the supporting characters (Peg, Holly, Finn). But overall, I think this book just wasn’t for me. If you’re into horses and slow-paced, moody fiction, you’ll probably love it.
I did enjoy watching
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Sexism, Blood
Moderate: Death, Violence, Death of parent
Minor: Bullying, Grief, Injury/Injury detail
The Scorpio Races started out pretty good but it never excelled into a great story.
There were no characters that stood out. Actually, I found quite a few of them to be pretty annoying. Puck included.
There was also a lot of repitition, chapters told from Sean's POV were always about Corr and Sean denying his feelings for Puck. And the chapters told from Puck's POV were always about her worrying and whining over everything and sometimes I just wanted to yell at her to grow up.
The Scorpio Races was an okay book, the writing itself wasn't too bad but I felt there was a lack of character and plot development.

From the moment I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I thought it was amazing through and through
This book was well written but I was a little disappointed, maybe just because the plot summary led me to expect something more exciting and action-packed. Most of the story centered around the two main characters (Puck and Sean)'s life on the island and their preparations for the Scorpio Races, which are horse races involving killer sea horses with sharp teeth. It just sounded more interesting than it was to read. I liked the prose and the dialogue but there were just a lot of characters that weren't that interesting to me, and the book felt kind of long. Just seemed anticlimactic when the actual races were only the last few pages of the book, and most of the plot lines were already more or less tied up by then.
