I preferred the abridged audio book. It was more concise and interesting.

I was honestly rolling my eyes at the first third of this book. It started getting interesting when Marcus started recounting hell week. And then, I just had to stay up to finish the book.
I can't imagine how Marcus was able to relive the final moments of his friends and put them into words. Such an incredible show of bravery from all of them.
And gosh, how many times does this guy fall? Luck was certainly on Marcus' side.

This is the third book about the Navy S.E.A.Ls that I've recently read and by far my favorite. Luttrell's story of perseverance in the face of great odds is inspiring.
The first half of the book moves slowly- setting the backdrop of the story. He tells of his extensive training and teamwork indoctrination. Years later in the Hindu Kush, Luttrell's training was put to the ultimate test. He had to learn how to survive on his own- without his team. The second half of the book is about the tragedy of Operation Redwing where Luttrell is the only survivor.
His story is frustrating, heartbreaking and inspiring. Another solid read that makes me thankful there are men out there doing their jobs, protecting us, with bravery and valor.

A great book about the indomitable spirit. You've got to look past some of the clear propaganda speech, but its well written and absolutely worth reading. Perseverance over all obstacles.
Great story of survival and heroism. I'm usually not into reading military stuff, but I finished this book in three days and thought about it for weeks.
True story account of Operation Redwing in Afghanistan in 2005 which ended up being the largest loss of life in Navy Seal history.
Marcus Luttrell tells the fascinating story of how he became a Navy Seal and the ill fated mission he and three of his Navy Seal unit undertook in the mountains of Afghanistan. The sections about his Navy Seal training were amazing. These men are tested and trained to their absolute limits and are deserving of huge amounts of respect. The minute by minute recall of the Redwing operation is heartbreaking...especially knowing that only Luttrell survives.
He speaks a lot about rules of engagement and how the U.S. forces are often hampered by having to follow rules that their enemies do not. He talks about how civilian casualities are sometime necessary but that the men in the field are reluctant to do what is best for their mission and theif safety because of repercussions from the "liberal media" (as he calls it) or from punishment from the government and people for which they have sworn to give their life. It makes for an interesting debate.
It is the basis for the recently released film Lone Survivor starring Mark Wahlberg.
