A nice little tale. Watson gets more of a look-in with this the second Holmes novel, by way of a romantic subplot (which is rather poorly rendered, regrettably). Holmes meanwhile employs his street urchins and improbably perfect disguises to catch the wrongdoers. Many amusing details and a helping of quotable Sherlockisms abound. Engaging, but far from sublime.

Pretty alright I guess. Better than the first in some regards, worse in others. Still not what I hoped a Sherlock Holmes story would be.

I liked that it felt less chopped in half than A Study in Scarlet and I unexpectedly enjoyed the pulpier, more adventurous parts of the story.

I found the whole backstory / motivation part behind the crime somewhat complex and convoluted although I'm not sure if thats a bad thing. Same goes for the introduction of a love interest, which I didn't expect this early in the series.

All in all pretty enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to the short stories coming up.

Another enjoyable read. It always surprises me how small the sense of mystery is in Sherlock Holmes novels. Everything is so matter of fact. It becomes a display of intellect and a show of the mystery being solved more than anything.
This is not something I dislike and is a very fascinating thing to read about.

One moment I particularly liked in this instalment was that when Watson first meets Mary Morsten. You can plainly see from his acute description of her features and perceivable character that he has taken a great liking to Mary.
And by the end of the novel indeed she becomes Mary Watson.

I also find it fascinating how much backstory is provided in these novels, as readers we are often taken back many many years in order to truly understand the motives behind the crime.

Overall, I believe I will not soon cease to enjoy going on adventures will my dearest companions - Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

:D

I think that if I'd read it before the hounds of Baskerville (which is the correct order...) I would've loved this one more, but because I loved the hounds of Baskerville more, I gave this one four stars instead of five.
