The book like all Rohinton Mistry's books takes place primarily in Mumbai during the time of political turmoil. In this case it's the Indian Emergency and the sterilization drive that took place mid-70s
Even though this is hailed as Mistry's best work (probably because of the way he allows the reader to picturize the world he has created.) I pre Family Matters over it.
The entire story has a melancholy feel about it and the "tone" doesn't really change.
It follows 4 people who have all led tragic lives and who are tied together not only because of their daily meetings but their common knowledge of what it's like to lose a loved one.

One of the best books, Ive ever read in my life! Its hard to describe the feelings ive had after i finished it. The story is complex&intrueging and the characters are deep-layered and well written out. I will have to read it several times until i will grasp every detail. But although the book consists of nearly 800 pages i never had the feeling, that it was too much and overwhelming like books with a similar size.
The story itself was somehow depressing, telling gruesome details of poverty, caste violence and opression but its the first time, that a book from a canadian/indian pictured the reality of the majority of indian people living in poor conditions, dealing with corruption and injustice. At the same time you got a glimpse of life and of hope. I really liked the conception and build up of the story.

Not to spoil anything, but the title does not refer to a balance between the characters or society or anything as concrete as that. The "fine balance" is between hope and despair, and the book really walks that line the whole way through. It's a wonderful book and the four main characters are exceptionally developed, but you should expect to cry through about 3/4 of this book.

This is such a brilliantly ploted story. Every character has their own individual story and these individual stories merge into this poignant and devastating narrative about the struggles of the Indian people during the Emergency period.
