I didn’t love this as much as I thought I would! still delightfully Austen, but just a lot of fluff around the edges I wasn’t as interested in. it was interesting to see Fanny’s view of her family shift from the beginning to the end of the book.
At present, Fanny is the most relatable main character for me from Austen's works. I really liked her as a protagonist, her life has various similarities with mine. I also loved the plot, although slow at the beginning, it was very interesting and somehow intense from the middle to the end. One of my favourite books by Austen, even though a certain aspect of the ending (which I won't mention, since it would be a spoiler) made me feel a bit uncomfortable.
The weakest of Jane Austen's novels. The heroine is not relatable and the plot is long and tedious. Even the fact that the hero's name is Edmond doesn't make it better (which, if you know me, any character named Edmond is automatically awesome in my book).
I feel quite conflicted about Mansfield Park, the last book I had to read from Austen, one I was extremely exited for. In theory there is nothing wrong with the book, I just didn´t feel very connected to Fanny and most of all, I wasn´t able be on board with her romantic relationship. Because romances are one of my favorite things about Austen´s stories, it was a big loss. From the start I was able to guess what might happen but I didn´t want to believe it. I was not comfortable with the idea of Fanny marrying first of all her cousin, second of all a man who has pretty much raised her. Like this wasn´t enough, Edmund was quite annoying most of the book. But Mansfield Park does shine in something - the subplots and side characters. I was sometimes more interested in their lives than in Fanny´s. If you don´t count the main romance, I found the relationships really entertaining and surprising. Austen´s writing is also just as insightful as ever, the book didn´t even feel too long with it´s 560 pages. Mansfield Park is definitely my least loved Jane Austen novel, though I did enjoy it overall. And the 1999 movie is quite fantastic, I thought all the changes it had were for the better. I was even able to be happy for Fanny and Edmund!
nothing happens for 300 pages, then it looks like something is about to happen, nothing actually happens, and then it’s incest
I liked Mansfield Park—it’s Jane Austen after all— but I didn’t love it. Fanny was just too perfect, too unflinchingly moral and upright. I relate so much to other “good” women in her books, like Elinor Dashwood and Anne Elliot— their restraint and easy tempers don’t mean they feel passionately and make mistakes and err just like everyone else. Fanny legitimately does nothing in her entire story. Love the writing, but the plot was a morality tale wrapped in a snooze.
My least favorite Austen, this feels like a sermon rather than a story. It helped to read “The Murder of Mr. Wickham” in the middle of this, because part of that book felt like a chat with an Austen fan who agrees that Edmund is too sanctimonious to be a prize. I understand the overt social commentary, but I also have to think that there’s a warning in the “happy” ending, too, and that takes a great deal of the fun out of this one.
I wish I liked this better, but I don’t. If you’re contemplating reading your first Jane Austen book, start with literally anything else.

'Mansfield Park' was the last of Jane Austen's novels on my to-read list and finally I have managed it. I'm not quite sure why it has taken so long for this title to join the others, after all I am a big fan of all of her other novels (torn between 'Persuasion' and 'Pride and Prejudice' as a favourite).
I enjoyed the book immensely. Although at times the pace slows, it really makes you feel the pains which Fanny Price goes through. The choices she has to make and the limitations which press upon her.
I definitely think a second reading of this book is necessary as it is one where upon another reading many of the more serious themes are not present until a second reading has been attempted.
Not my favourite Austen but a great read, quick, comforting and thought provoking at every turn!

It took a while for me to get into this book. Not much happens for the majority of the novel but Austen’s writing skills compensate for it. The last 50 pages or so are packed with action and were a lot to take in.
I did enjoy this novel but I would rate it below the majority of Austen’s other novels, due to the lack of a plot. The heroine was interesting yet I would have enjoyed more character development.

To me, it's the best of the bunch. Janeites are divided between those who hate the heroine Fanny Price and those who love her. I personally think she is THE moral compass for this terribly flawed family that is falling apart. In her Austen has created what is often seen as a "perfect" character, but Fanny's insight to the true nature of the others around her allows for some peace in a turbulent place like Mansfield Park. I would never suggest that a person start with this novel if they want to read some Austen, but I feel that it must be the second or third on your list, and give Fanny Price a chance to win you over.
I am reading it again for the Jane Austen book club on Goodreads, and I am so excited!
