WOW. I love historical fiction, and this one totally blew me away. I held my breath at some parts, got angry at others, and SOBBED at a few. This book has made it to my top 3.

I read this book because of the multitude of recommendations I heard and the many accolades that the author has been received. I’ll be honest, it’s my first Kristin Hannah book. Hannah is a lovely storyteller and her research is impeccable, but I honestly grew tired of listening. I kind of forced myself to finish, but I’m not even sure I could tell somebody what the whole story was about - how many disasters and abusive relationships can one person, or one reader, endure? And the ending? Awful.

I will say this is a well written novel. However, it is just too depressing for my personal taste. I did learn from it and it made a great book group discussion.

This book made me FEEL so much. I would have never chosen this book for myself - I usually stick to fantasy and rare read anything that could be described as historical fiction. The writing is captivating and it would take a second for me to get back to real life each time I had to put the book down. It brought this hard world to life. I need to go hydrated from how much I’ve cried.

On a more rational note: this book also made me THINK. There’s still so much that is wrong in the world in terms of how workers are treated and how children are educated. Many people would say “the good old days” as if hard times like these didn’t happen to Americans if they only worked hard enough. Everyone needs help sometimes and it is so important to help eachother. The people in these communities has so little, but still helped when they could and looked upon eachother as fellow human beings. The love goes hand in hand with the pain in these pages.

Kristin Hannah's 'The Four Winds' is an absolute triumph, deserving every bit of its five-star rating. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, this novel is a powerful and deeply moving exploration of resilience, love, and the human spirit. Hannah's storytelling is nothing short of extraordinary, as she brings to life the struggles and triumphs of the characters with vivid detail and emotional depth. The protagonist, Elsa, is a remarkable heroine whose journey from hardship to strength will resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page. Through her masterful prose, Hannah captures the harsh realities of the era while also weaving a tale of hope and redemption that is both inspiring and unforgettable. 'The Four Winds' is a timeless and important work of historical fiction that will leave a lasting impact on anyone fortunate enough to experience it.

Would give it 3 1/2 stars, but had to round down to 4. The writing is a bit uneven and slow to start. A good story, touching and heartfelt. It's a quick read but lacks something in style. I am a fan of Kristin Hannah; I just felt that this book didnt live up to its reputation.
