For the first two pages I was a little worried this would be about stereotypical “girl stuff” and “boy stuff”, but it really wasn’t. Instead this story explored the topic of trans children in a very direct and profound manner for a children’s book. The word transgender was used directly in the book, nobody was misgendered, it was shortly explored that all children are different, no matter the gender, and I especially loved how the book also included non-binary people by Aiden not liking if people asked about his brother and/or sister, because Aiden didn’t know if his sibling would be either. It was a really nice touch.
And Aiden was just generally really adorable, his parents very supporting, and the story as a whole was great.

For: readers looking for an own voices book about being a transgender kid and also getting to be a big brother to a new baby.

Possible red flags: LGBTQ+ representation; stress and angst.

I loved this book, it was informative without directly stating that it was teaching a different viewpoint of how to address unborn babies. I loved the story and Aidan is a true jewel, he was so concerned and excited to be a big brother. I loved seeing him grow and deciding what kind of brother role would fit him the best! :)

When Aidan was born, everyone thought he was a girl. But as he grew, he realized that “girl” just didn’t fit. His loving family helped him settle into being a boy. But now that his mom is pregnant, Aidan wants to be sure that his new sibling doesn’t encounter the same challenges that he did.

The artwork in this book is breathtaking. The vivid colors are stunning and the additional details portrayed add so much to the overall story.

Last year, my sister called to ask about books to help explain transgender to my nephew as one of their family friend’s child was transitioning. I searched and searched but could not really find anything that was perfect. THIS fits that bill! I love the simple explanations, the artwork that helps convey the message, and the all-encompassing love & acceptance that bounces off the pages. Even better? When Aidan Became a Brother features non-White characters! I was absolutely giddy when I saw that.

My love affair with books from Lee and Low Publishing gets stronger and stronger. I simply adore how inclusive their stories are, how diverse the artwork is, and how representative their authors & illustrators are. What a fantastic publishing company – and this book is a good example of how awesome their catalog is.

So precious! And you can tell that the person who wrote it is part of the community. He handles the topic with grace and consideration, and I absolutely felt for Aiden. My heart hurt for Aiden in his low moments, and it sang for him as her lived his truth.

Can't recommend this book enough!!!!

Love everything about this picture book!! The art. The words! “Maybe he would have to fix mistakes he didn’t even know he was making. And maybe that was okay” ❤️
