Loved learning about the American Revolution through this historical fiction novel. The storyline was rich with adventure, romance, and camaraderie! I loved the sense of found family woven into this story. Shoutout to Azizat for the recommendation. I definitely wouldn't have picked this one up based on the description or cover page alone. Side note, why isn't Dominic's hair long on the cover page? Dominic LeVea, THE MAN THAT YOU ARE! That man was so down bad for Clare and I was eatinggg it up. Honestly surprised how much I truly enjoyed reading this book.

All the feels. When we reflect on our violent history as Black people, there truly is no happy ending in slavery. What happens when one main character gets a chance at freedom? We have Caribbean pirates, love story; history in one book. Beverly does it again!

4 stars. Well, that was an adventure. I really enjoyed this book. Our hero, Dominic, is a pirate and let me tell you the man is charming as all hell. I absolutely loved his character. He’s a cocky ladies man who’s willing to help the less fortunate at any cost. Clare is a slave and gets taken by Dominic and brought upon his ship. She was also a fantastic character and I felt for her so much. Not only was she a slave, her two kids were taken from her and sold by her master and damn did my heart break for her. This story was a lot heavier than what I’m used to from Jenkins but I think she handled the subject matter really well.

The relationship between Dominic and Clare was beautiful. The way he would stop at nothing to find her kids for her and just their chemistry was so wonderful. I also enjoyed the side characters from Dominic’s crew. They were all awesome.

There’s plenty of romance, steam, action and high seas adventure in this one. I adored it and I cannot recommend it enough.

Well, it’s happened. I’ve finally read a BJ novel that I truly did not enjoy.

Weirdly, the pacing of the story was both too fast and too slow. The romance happened very quickly and I had to suspend a lot of disbelief when Clare immediately agreed to be ‘tutored’ by Dominic. On the other hand, the plot was…well, boring. Despite the high-stakes sea adventures, it was hard to care about the major conflict of rescuing her children because it involved characters we’ve never met or seen on page. Once we do meet the children, they appear to just be vessels used to bolster the main coupling. Could this story have been told without them? Yes, and that’s the problem.

Ah well, it’s nice to have the fantasy of a LeVeq island and a true HEA for the characters.

I read Captured to fulfill this year's Book Riot Read Harder Challenge - challenge #16 is to read a historical romance by an author of colour - and I'm really glad I chose this novel to do so. I've read a bit of romance before, years ago, and didn't expect to enjoy the historical romance genre at all. The period of history this is set in, though, absolutely made it for me. How well researched it is shines through. The themes of piracy, slavery, and the American Civil War kept me interested where historical romances about kings, counts, and duchesses in England wouldn't have. The author's note talks about LeVeq's ship being based on a real slaver-turned-pirate ship, the Whydah from the 1710s, and Jenkins provides a bibliography of her resources. Taking part in this particular challenge has definitely widened my reading horizons, and I'm sure I'll seek out more from Jenkins in the future.

The first chapter sold me on a male love interest faster than any other romance novel I've ever read. Bravo!
