Nicely done

Really engrossing thriller (suspend your disbelief!). Interesting information about diving. This might be the first time I looked for the next book after an Amazon Prime first book! Not available yet

Andrew Mayne is a good writer. His stories unfold naturally and there is always a twist that's worth it. I've read several of his Naturalist books and been very entertained at how a mathematician becomes the expert at hunting serial killers. This book is more of the same, a regular girl lands on a major fault in the justice system and changes things. It was a great read!

There's a lot to like about this series opener. It's a fast read with lots of action to keep the reader turning pages. Sloan and her cohorts are likable, if not super original or memorable. The scuba diving/evidence recovery diving focus is an intriguing one that I haven't encountered before in a police procedural. The details are interesting (especially since I have no diving knowledge whatsoever) but didn't bog down the story. While the book's plot doesn't hold any surprises, it moved along at a decent clip and was compelling enough to keep me reading. Mayne's prose is skilled. All of these elements combine to create a novel that is exciting and entertaining. While there's nothing overly amazing about it, I quite enjoyed THE GIRL BENEATH THE SEA and am definitely interested in reading the next book in the series.

How can a book with lots of things happening be so utterly boring at the same time?

I couldn't care one bit about the main plot. Not one bit. The story was extremely bland.

The author has this quite amazing writing style where he wouldn't describe an area at all or set the scene in any way but then the more you read the more things don't make sense because of the way you pictured them in your head and things just magically shift in and out if reality to fit what's happening now and it is just bad. What's more is that a lot of things happen in water or marine related things but the author doesn't realise that normal people wouldn't know what these things normally are and just continues the story and I am filled to fill in the blanks and imagine how things work.

It is quite a fast read despite being ultimately boring, not the least bit thrilling, horribly written and I did not care about the plot or characters at all.

This was such a good crime read! I know very little about boats or diving, so no idea how accurate the narrative is, but I definitely got sucked in and wanted to know what happened. Read in one day. Will definitely continue the series.

I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Andrew Mayne and this book was no exception. I had a little trouble connecting with the characters at first but the story kept my interest. The Underwater Investigation Unit will be a fun series!
