This was my first non-fiction book of the year and a really good one. Lauren is a professional runner who shares her experiences and hopes for changes in the female running industry. It is honest, interesting, and super engaging.

Book Report: Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World

At First Glance: I love everything about this cover and title.

The Gist: Fueled by her years as an elite runner and advocate for women in sports, Lauren Fleshman offers her inspiring personal story and a rallying cry for reform of a sports landscape that is failing young female athletes.

My Thoughts: On a whim I started running… I look forward to each day I lace up my shoes and take off, so much so I wanted to read more about the sport. I searched running non-fiction at the library and Good For a Girl popped up first. Non-fiction that reads like a memoir, plus critique, I’m always here for! This is just a peek at women’s sports, a conversation starter that is long over due and I loved what Lauren shared and the light she shed on much I was unaware of. I think this is an important read for anyBODY!

My Question for Lauren: Do you have a running mantra or phrase that’s stuck with you through the years?

Interesting, actually wish there were more about her setbacks even tho that’s not a positive experience. Her relationship with running is wholly un relatable to me because I’ve never been fast or done it for a team but still an interesting story

She seems cool and like someone who is actually trying to contribute to change

The writing itself didn't always speak to me but as a former D1 runner, the experiences of performance and body pressure and lack of education around what women's running trajectory looks like hit dead-on. I had read a few of Fleshman's blogs over the years and it was enjoyable to gain more context on her experiences and reflect on my own. I still love running but have to maintain a very different relationship to it as an adult than I did as a young competitor in order to not lose that love. I appreciate her reflections on all the different ways to be a part of the running community outside of traditional high-level success.
