A wonderful combination of a captivating family story and Indonesian history, with kretek holding it all together.

Reading this after watching the series. They have a quite different focus. The movie is having stronger highlight on the said 'gadis kretek', while the book told the story chronologically.
I initially thought this book will be tiring since it timed in the past, but turns out it quite light read i could finish in 1 day. Honestly though, i like the series more since some critical part in the series (e.g. the iconic scene of dasiyah went to radja wedding) turns out to be only a narration in the book.

This book has sat on my reading list forever but I just read it this year after the Netflix adaptation was aired. I thought it was a boring tale with stiff language, but it turned out to be very exciting and I found it very hard to put this book down. The storytelling flowed naturally and was incredibly easy to follow. I am a Javanese descendant so the myths and traditions mentioned in the book, written in a descriptive fashion, can be easily imagined throughout the story.

(...I always love historical fiction, so take my rating with a grain of salt. ◡̈)

Suitable reading if you're in the mood for:
❁ post-war novel
❁ business and love competition
❁ women in cigarette industry
