I think this might have been hyped too much because I was expecting something amazing and got something good. The characters are interesting and complex and make you think but they didn't really appeal to me. Yes, I love that the characters are flawed, physically and mentally but I didn't care about them. Well, until the very end and the new character YES, I am interested in her and excited to see where she goes.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever that raged across the land years ago. It took her mother and left her marked. Living in a world where the marked are seen as a scourge, she has to escape a cruel father, avoid the Inquisition that would have all marked survivors killed, and learn to live in the world of the Young Elites, a group of marked survivors who have developed powerful abilities and struck fear into the hearts of the people.

This was an interesting book. I love the concepts and even the writing behind it, but the main character, Adelina, I had a hard time liking. I understand her character is harsh and sharp, but I still need something to cling to so I can follow this character's story.

This book was amazing! I can’t believe what happened.

I wish Enzo had won the fight against Teren. I’m impressed at Adelina’s ability to rescue her sister. I could easily tell how conflicted she felt. I have a suspicion Enzo will be brought back to life in one of the next books. I’m not sure how to feel about her killing Dante.

Another good, futuristic novel from Lu. There are interesting characters and a good plot. A girl who is disfigured by a fever that also leaves her with powers to unleash her passion and fury into tangible sights, sounds, and fears. She joins a secret society battling a solider who is trying to wipe out their kind.

I wish I'd never bought it. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of novels written in first person, but will make an exception for an unusual plot and the chance to experience a kick-ass heroine. And that's what I thought I was getting when I saw the great reviews on this and read the description.

I was sorely disappointed in TYE, and my first experience of Marie Lu. I have struggled to finish this, hate leaving any book like that - but ML didn't make this easy. The writing was unemotional and flat, (lots of tell rather than show...) and I found it quite jarring in some places. Some facts didn't even match up IMO (i.e one moment hair is described as copper, the next blonde ...I suppose it depends on your perception of copper curls).

I adore a good villain/anti-hero (YES Loki) - but MC Adelina irritated the hell out of me for all the reasons stated in the passionate & very informative reviews written by Mizuki and Kiki. I don't really need to go into it, they've really said everything I was thinking & thankyou! I thought I was going insane seeing all the rave reviews. Just really disappointed, as could have had so much potential.

[May 8, 2018]

I picked this up because I really enjoyed Legend by Marie Lu! (The rest of that trilogy didn't really live up to the first one, but that's OK haha)

I feel like I haven't read a fantasy novel in forever, and it was a nice breath of fresh air to feel lost and immersed in a new world again. I believe Lu said that Kenettra was inspired by 14th century Venice, and my history knowledge is not that specific, but I felt like I was really there with the characters haha. I quite enjoyed the atmosphere created by various setting and character descriptions, as Lu made it easy for me to picture them clearly in my mind.

The characters are all developed well - the concept and execution of Adelina's were especially sharp. She is so dark/morally grey, so it was interesting to see what goes on in her head as she struggles with trust and loyalty. I enjoyed the relationships, be them platonic or romantic, that she formed as she was taken in by the Dagger Society. The antagonist was complex and tragic, and I look forward to seeing more of him as the series progresses.

All the superpowers in this book are really cool! Lu's magic system is loose, but I enjoyed reading about it and how it incorporated the idea of energy. I was also intrigued by the way this world's mythology affects society and and different characters' thought processes.

Lastly, but not leastly lol, there is a brief hint if lesbianism at the very end of the novel, which is just cruel because it only left me wanting more

Type of book: Fantasy with maybe some Dsytopian vibes.

Mini Summary:
Adelina is one of the survivors from a blood fever that happened to kill thousands of people. She is sentenced to death because she is a murderer.

Characters:
* Adelina (Blood Fever Survivor)
* Enzo (The Reaper. Leader of a Dagger Society part of Young Elites)
* Teren (Lead Inquisition of Kenettra)
* Raffaele (The Messenger. Young Elite)

Quote & Page:
- "Some hate us, think us outlaws to hang at the gallows. Some fear us, think us demons to burn at the stake. Some worship us, think us children of the gods. But all know us." (Page 1)
- “Every Elite responds to energy in a unique way, and every Elite has a different strength and weakness. Some people respond to strength and bravery. Others are wise and logical. Still others are ruled by passion.” (Page 69)

Notes:
* Adelina was abused by her father and is a survivor of a blood fever. She is one of the Young Elites and a Malfetto.
* People who survived the blood fever were marked in various ways and they are called Malfettos.
* Adelina is in a cell for the murder of her father. She is to be sentenced to death.
* Young Elites are people who have developed powers from the blood fever.
* Adelina is rescued by a member of the Elites and is ask to join their Society.

My Thoughts:
* This has a very interesting plot that a disease/fever can give you powers.
* There is a part of this book that gets a bit intense when there is a group of the Daggers abusing Adelina to get her powers to come out. I feel like they should have approached her differently to get her power to surface.
* This book has a great Sister bond in it.
* The last 100 pages are intense and crazy. It had me becoming sad of what is to come for everyone.

I forgot how much I loved this book, defo a top 10 favourite

"I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside."

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings and  mysterious and  powerful gifts.

This was a great read.
