This was more brutal at times than I felt was necessary. I think I’m too old for YA, because the main character’s thought process was the main road block for me enjoying this. Not for the faint of heart.

Usually I find something to not like about these books but I really enjoyed this one. The one problem I had is that they never explained her power....unless I missed it early on. I felt that the pacing was good and the stakes felt real unlike most YAs. The main character had what I felt was the appropriate responses to the adults in her life.
Spoiler Being betrayed by her mother her whole life gives her a legit trust issue with adults. The teacher, Mike, felt like a great person in her life from school. Someone that is actually looking out for her future. Wills mother and father are great support that she doesn't feel she deserves. Its nice that she can trust in these adults.

I loved this book so much! It's been a long time since a book has given me so much STRESS. I felt like Katrell kept spinning plates and spinning plates and it was only a matter of time before one of them fell but the tension buildup was so strong. I read Jessica Lewis's second book, Monsterous, first and loved it enough to check this out, but sometimes it's hard going backwards in an author's catalog. This was not the case here! It was just as good! Plus some similar themes that I found really interesting. I can't wait to see what Lewis comes up with next.
I just wanted a liiiiiittle more at the end. I know this is behind a spoiler wall but I still don't want to spoil it so I'll just say: there were a few questions left unanswered. And also I wanted Katrell and Will to kiss but that's a me problem haha

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First off, I hated Katrell's mom and her mom's dumb ass boyfriend in Bad Witch Burning. They were both manipulative people and I just despised them so much. They never deserved her one bit. Especially when they couldn't even take care of themselves, keep a job, or pay to have a roof over their heads.

Other than that, I actually enjoyed this book. Katrell and Will's friendship was one for the books. I really enjoyed them being together and trying to bring some joy back to people's lives. Especially after they lost a loved one. Mostly because Katrell has a pretty unique power that goes through an upgrade with a lot of consequences to it.

In the end, I wasn't that upset with what certain characters went through but I didn't like the deep dark road that Katrell was tumbling down. I'm glad that she got help towards the end and got her one piece of happiness. She definitely deserved more people in her corner - even if it was a little late to do so.

I binge-read this book in one sitting. The concept was so interesting and chilling, especially as things took a darker turn (though I find the whole novel to be dark). Still, there are moments of light, which fall in line with one of the overarching themes. Katrell narrates this emotionally-charged, gripping tale of her sad life, anger, and grief, all the while raising the dead.

It relates to our society and women and children being abused. The ending could have been more cheerful.
