It relates to our society and women and children being abused. The ending could have been more cheerful.

2.5 stars for me. This book just really wasn’t for me. I would’ve liked a little more focus on the fantasy aspect rather than the real world issues but all of the issues Katrell faced were handled pretty well. It definitely slowed down for me towards the end and I was just frustrated that the solution to her revenants for most of the time was “stop that” without actually attempting to do anything. I can see why she was written that way, it just annoyed me.

I like how the main character's relationship with her mother is written. The story's conflict is fleshed out and reasonably complex. The ending feels a little abrupt considering how action-packed the entire story it.

I was really excited to read this book, but ultimately I was a little let down when I finished. I got to a point about 40% through where I didn't think I'd be able to continue because Trell just frustrated me so. Darn. Much. I felt bad for her and what she was going through and I had to remind myself that she was a teenager, but she kept making stupid decision after stupid decision and refused to listen to people around her until it was too late.

The book starts kind of in medias res as far as Trell's power, but I would have liked an explanation as to where it came from and why it changed when it did. Was she the only one who had that power and, if so, why her? She was so driven by money that she didn't even take the time to understand the new power and its consequences.

Overall, the fantasy element was a bit lacking to me, but it does touch on some really heavy themes such as abuse, neglect, and poverty.

I got so passed off at the treatment of the main character, I know it reflects life but it also hardens my opinion that some people shouldn't have kids.

I really didn’t know what this book was about except the title had the word “witch” and it’s a black author. Imagine my surprise when I read the entire book in one sitting. Really really good book.

3.5 stars. This was well written, engaging, and ... very depressing. It's about someone who has the power to resurrect the dead and I wish it had focused a bit more on the 'fantastical' of it, though to be fair the fact she has this power reverberates through the whole story.

The real horror of the story is not what happens with the dead people she brings back but with the abuse she suffers at home. Her mother is neglectful and her mother's boyfriend beats her, kills her dog, and they both (the mother and boyfriend) blame her for their actions. It's a hard read and had I known it would be a huge factor in this story I probably wouldn't have read it as I'm not really in the right headspace.

But the story kept me reading because I wanted to know how it all ended. All in all I'm glad I read it but I wish it had come with some sort of trigger warning because a few of the scenes really got to me for personal reasons.
