Reread 10/5/22

It has been a long time since I first read this series. I can see how teenage Harley would have really enjoyed this book and given it 5 stars. Now at 26 though, it’s no longer a 5 star book. Out of nostalgia I give it 4, though it maybe might be more of a 3 star read. Overall I really enjoyed this and had a lot of fun reading it. I remember a little about this series but not tons so it was fun to be back. I think I will try to reread the rest of the series here shortly.

Like a Harry Potter/Gossip Girl mash-up set in Georgia. A fun, fast read.

Another boarding school fantasy novel. I liked this one better than House of Night or Vampire Academy. Setting it in Georgia was a nice touch, but I wish more had been done to incorporate the location. I also wish I'd gotten a better sense of what a school day was like.

This book earns a 4.5/5 rating from me. What made me really enjoy this story was the main character, Sophie Mercer. Every sentence she uttered never failed to make me laugh.

Rachel Hawkins did a really great job on this novel. With the witty wordplay and humor-filled lines from the main characters.

The reason why I didn't give a 5 star rating was that prior to reading this book, I was kind of expecting that there will be some kind of battle between the good and the bad, which was mainly influenced by some of the paranormal books I have read.

But over all, still a great novel and this still earns a place in my 'favorite books' shelf.

4.5 Stars!

I seriously enjoyed this book. It started off slow, but over time it became so fast-paced. The characters were enjoyable, relatable and I'm desperate the get the 2nd and 3rd book.

I need more Witchy paranormal books in my life.

Great story! There were so many twists that kept me thinking about the ending. Although it did start off with a Harry Potter feeling to it, the story later progressed away from that and became an interesting tale of its own. Can't wait to find out the ending of the story!

what a cute reread! this book exemplifies those 2010s paranormal books, and throws me back in the best way. this book is probably the best of the series, and doesn’t feel too rushed

There are only a few contemporaries that I actually like a lot and Rachel Hawkins wrote one of them, so when I saw that she had also written a trilogy about witches, warlocks and other magical creatures I just knew that I needed and wanted to have it. It was quite a challenge to find the first book in this series, but now I've finished reading it, I'm really happy that it worked out!

The first thing I noticed was that the writing style was very nice, easy and flowing. The language used really fitted the age of the main character and her personality. I always consider that a big pro, because that really makes it all the more easy to connect with the characters and it makes it easier to get to know them.

And then there were all the so called forbidden tropes that just worked out perfectly. There was a love triangle in this book. We had a special snow flake girl who only just discovered how special she was. We have a magic school with strict teachers and mean girls. And of course our main character falls for the hot hunk of the school. But Hawkins managed to twist all of these tropes in a very interesting way and therefore kept me constantly on the tips of my toes AND managed to surprise me.

Was the book very deep and filled with brilliancy? Maybe not. But for an easy read about a teenage witch on a magic school, it was actually really well done. I can't wait to read the other books in the series. They're already waiting for me on my to be read shelf!

I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately, so I haven't got a whole lot read. This book should have taken me a day or two to read, instead of the few days it took. A lot of the young adult novels I read don't really feel like young adult. I don't ever feel like I'm reading a book for younger readers. But with Hex Hall, I really felt it.

I've read a few reviews where the readers thought the main character was sassy and funny, but the humor all just seemed very young. Like things kids in junior high might think was funny. Maybe it's just my mood, and that would account for the reading slump and the not finding humor in things. Sophie was okay, but definitely not a favorite character for me.

I would probably recommend this to younger YA fans, or maybe just someone who's in a better mood than I am. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything very memorable.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I was looking through my "to read" list and went back to some of the first books I had added to my list from a couple years ago. Figured it would be a change to take a step back. I found myself really getting into it. I enjoyed the storyline, the twists and turns and almost all the characters. Is it bad to say I wasn't a very big Archer fan? I don't know why, but I just couldn't connect with him. Maybe that will change in the next books?? I'm going to keep it short and sweet.
