The sequel to the sublime What Moves The Dead (a fabulous retelling of the House of Usher and far superior to the original. Yes I said that), we again follow the gender-free protagonist as they/ka navigate the folk horrors of their native eastern european land. It’s creepy, it’s witty and the characters are lovingly written - even the grumpy ones. Can’t wait for the final tale in the trilogy. Love Kingfisher’s writing.

I loved *What Moves the Dead*, so I'm frustrated to be giving such a low rating to the follow-up. The characters and writing both suffer in the sequel, and the overall mystery is both less dark and less mysterious. The new characters are pretty plain and one-noted in particular.
I also find the introduction ofmagic to be unfortunate. I loved that the first book just created a weird fungus as an explanation. I think that's part of what made the first stronger.
I did appreciate more time in the world of the sworn soldier, which I think is the biggest strength of the book, but really I think this series should have been left as a standalone.

The internet said you could read this book as a standalone. While I would say that is technically true you do feel a little like you are walking into the middle of something that is already going on. The story is standalone the characters maybe not as much. It was a fun fast read. I loved the lore and superstitions. The other books in this series are and immediate TBR add.

This volume dives into Easton's past as a soldier and their complex feelings around war, as well as what happened in Volume 1. It's scary because you care about what happens to the characters, and you want everyone to be okay.
