It was OK. There was no plot but more like a collection of incidents.

The ending caught me off guard.

Beautifully written cautionary tale of newfound wealth in India.

Let's get clear of the one very in-your-face weakness in the writing: by the time we get to know about the origins of "ghachar ghochar", the reason for choosing such a term is already obvious to the reader. It was no surprise then that it returned in the closing lines (the closing words to be exact, imagine the cringe!)

But I'll give it to the book for being so engaging despite being another family story. Getting out of a slump with this was real fun - the time a book gets to explore things is provided neither to film nor to a series, which is why a descriptive middle-class-to-riches story worked. As the events transpired I wanted to see Anita rebelling more and more - that did happen. And I wanted to get something to root for in the narrator. Initial disappointment aside, I think the lack of redemption was intentional and pretty much the point of the book. The rich don't want to look themselves in the mirror. It's why the ending works so well - all that talk about how easy it is to get away with murder, then the wife doesn't call, then the literal blood on the hand turning symbolic.

the last page gave a new meaning to the whole story before, those seemingly idle remarks felt very pointed all of a sudden

nice writing

Ahhh what a lovely read! Though the book was really short and ended sort of on a cliffhanger, I thoroughly enjoyed each page of it. This is the sort of books that just let you experience the lives of the characters vividly. I found myself fully emerssed into the story to point I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards for a long long time. The narrative is great, it kind of beings everything to life. The title and cover page (the one with ants on it, not this edition) really intrigued me at first, and I’m so happy that they make sense to me now to the point I would want to use the word ‘Ghachar Ghochar’ in my colloquial language. ;)
I would have loved to know what happens at the end, because I was a little disturbed when it ended so abruptly. But now that I look at it, the ending lets the reader imagine of the endless possibilities of what could have happened. I haven’t read many books that does so much to the reader in such limited pages!
