I bought into the childlike, yet at times profound voice of the narrator who returns home to face his life and family after a stint in a mental health facility. The voice seemed genuine to me and helped guide this story of how the protagonist emerges and ultimately triumphs over a rough period in his life. (Feel I must add -- as I only ended up reading the book because of the movie -– is that I liked the book more, mainly because you experience the protagonist’s journey with him yet are removed and objective as a reader. I didn't feel the changes to the characters and plot were necessary, or that they were in some way to complicated to transfer to the screen. If they had been more faithful to the book, I think it would have been a more heartfelt movie.)

We all need some silver linings.

Definitely a good story, and the characters are interesting. This book is lighthearted while adding depth into personal development. The relationship between the main characters is amusing and enticing. Be aware the movie takes many liberties, but the book is a more streamlined portrayal of the story.

Quick read and interestingly done.

Read this on the plane yesterday. Super quick read, keeps you interested. It may be the perfect book to read when going thru a break-up that makes you sad but you know is for the best. Don't want to give away anything, but the main character is stuck at a point in his life that you as the reader can see he needs to get past, but instead of being annoyed at his resistance to change I found myself routing for him to make progress. The resolution may have been a little bit quick, but it was still satisfying.

A moving, warm, and often hilarious story about mental illness and life that is ultimately uplifting and positive, filled with unforgettable characters. Read my full review at:
