I absolutely loved Silver Linings Playbook! I sort of felt like I was reading a grown up version of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, so how could I not fall on love? Pat's character is charming and optimistic, and it is easy to jump into his brain and root for him. I know the movie is supposed to be amazing, but I'm nervous to watch it after loving the book so much. We shall see!

Pearl's Pick recommended this one, and it was GREAT. In a funny kind of way the main character reminded me of Junie B. Jones, except he's a guy, and he's 35, and he's mentally ill. The exact type of mental illness is left pretty vague, but at the beginning of the book, the main character had just been released from an extended trip to a "neural health facility," and his only wish is to get back together with his wife Nikki. His adventures in being kind rather than right is touching and funny and just sucks you in.

There are a lot of first-person books about broken people. This one talks about masculine roles in our society, how we figure out what we are thinking and what the people around us are thinking. It's about need, and the cycle of abuse, and people who can't communicate. This book is sort of a "Fault in Our Stars" + "Curious Incident of the Dog..." + ...something similar but about middle class Americans in Pittsburgh?

This book's voice is too juvenile to be believable. Also, events are too coincidental and lined up to be believable (up to and including a montage, a Christmas miracle, and a perfect "all wrapped up" ending.) So it isn't trying to be realistic.

The writing is good. The structure is good. It's just a good, solid read that will challenge you if you haven't read this sort of book before. It might bore you or bother you or seem naive if you've read a lot of books like this. The stuff with the main character's dad was my favorite part.

Highly entertaining. A fast read, more than a little hilarious, and very true.

Also, I know why I enjoyed this and why it was such an easy read. He's a young adult writer. Explains a lot.
