I don’t normally subscribe to the half stars when doing ratings, but I’m going to today.

I’m giving Insolent by Cynthia A. Rodriguez 3.5 stars.

There are a few men in this book who are from Spain, and obviously their first language is Spanish. I love when authors use other cultures, and use other languages to enhance their stories. What I don’t love is when they don’t translate it in any way. Thankfully I read this book on kindle so I could just highlight the sentence and the translation popped up- if I had to read this book in paperback, I’d have probably DNF’d it. Simply for the fact that I hate missing pieces.

Outside of that, I really enjoyed this story! This sinister fairytale is a spin of a Brave, which I haven’t seen so I cannot inform you whether Rodriguez did the movie it’s dark justice or not. (In my twisted mind, I love the similarities between the originals and these dark alternate universes these authors have created for us.)

Moira is raised in royalty, but not in the traditional way. I loved her character, her strength, and control. The way she knew who she was and owned it.

I do have some questions that weren’t answered, so that’s a little annoying as well, but not terribly so, I can guess as to what happened after a certain event (don’t want to give a spoiler).

At the end of the day, I definitely enjoyed this story (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3 with my actual rating being 3.5). I would recommend this book, and I do hope there is a follow up story of some type! I’m not quite ready to be finished with Moira!

"I was not stolen.
I was saved."

I don't even have to hesitate for one second when I say this: Insolent is Cynthia's best writing to date. I don't know if it's because of the genre or if it's because of the POV that it's written in, but the writing flowed so poetically and sharply I couldn't help but love it. With good writing comes vivid settings. And with vivid settings comes characters with depth. Check, check, and check!

This isn't a book that I would typically read but when it was all said and done, I was so glad I took the time to read it in all of it's beauty. The characters were vigilant and strong but also heartbreaking. You couldn't help but to FEEL them and feel for them. I think that speaks volumes about an authors writing.

If you're a fan of incredibly haunting third person writing (seriously, I am so impressed by this), vivid and poignant characters, and falling in love when you least expect it (swoon!), then you need to pick up Insolent. Whether you know story the retelling is of, I can promise that you will have a great experience reading this one and it will be different from anything you have read before.

Cynthia is a new author to me, so I went into this not knowing what to expect and from page one I was completely consumed by this dark retelling fairytale. I am loving these retellings in Sinister Fairy Tales series, and this one blew me away. It's certainly on the darker side. It's full of secrets, obsession, revenge, passion, and love.

Moria, the heroine of the story was extraordinary. With each scene in this book, she grew inbounds, she fights the darkness that lives within her and her strength shines through... She will take risks and doesn't really fear death. The author played her character perfectly in my opinion.

S0l, the Hero of the tale is dark, someone to fear but throughout the book, I saw glimpses of other sides to him and at first, I wasn't a massive fan but as the story progressed, I found myself completely smitten with him.

All in all, this was a one of a kind romance, I haven't really read anything like it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author made it easy to follow the storyline and created some amazing characters, and it was so well written.

5 Stars!

Insolent is part of the Sinister Fairy Tale Collection and I was really excited to pick this one up. The blurb just sounded so interesting and even though I haven't seen the movie "brave" I know this is a sorta retelling of it, dark romance style. I think I had my hopes too high on this one because even though so far the books I have read in this collection so far have been amazing reads, this one just didn't do it for me at all and I was so sad about it. I just wanted so much more from this story and it felt so mediocre in many ways. I really was hoping that this would be delivered in a different way than it was. It just felt so off even for a dark romance. Normally I can connect with dark romance but in this one, I just wanted the book to be over, I wasn't invested in the story much and I think much of that had to do with the character growth in the story. When you can't connect with the characters, it really affects the enjoyment overall and I did feel like the chemistry between these two could have had more focus. I didn't really understand the hero in this book, he wasn't intriguing or mystery but just a cold hard man that we never got a deeper perspective into, So while I recommend the series as a whole, this book I can't honestly recommend even if you are a fan of dark romance. It might work for some readers, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. So while the premise of the story was quite fascinating, it just didn't quite deliver in the ways that I was hoping for.

I like this dark spin of Brave story, this is book number four from the Sinister Fairy Tale Collection, but my first read, I love dark stories and retelling the story of Brave, we get Moira, who has been locked away all her life, now their parents want to auction her to the highest bidder. Then something happens and she finds herself away from it all, but she finds herself in another prison, one where her feelings for her captor will be involved, Will Sol will either save her or be her demise.

I’ve been trying to think of a proper way to explain how Insolent made me feel. Cynthia’s writing continues to get better with every story she tells and the feelings she invokes with her words is uncanny, yet absolutely natural.

I found similarities in Moira and myself. Which is quite terrifying. But also wonderful. She’s a fighter of the best kind.

The dark tones. The blood. The hunt. The hidden light. Forbidden love.

Insolent is astoundingly beautiful. Read it. Love it.

AMAZING!!!

There is no other word to describe this story and Cynthia's writing style. I loved the poetry of this story and the way it flowed just like a fairy tale only darker!
I will say it was like a breath of fresh air to read this in third person instead of first. It would have been a completely different story if it was told in first and I might not have connected with it the way I did. (Just a preference.)

Hands down one of faves from this collection. (I mean I love them all, but this one holds a special place in my heart lol).

Well, that was darker than I expected! I went in expecting a variation of Brave and I got madness. The writing in this book was fantastic. Cynthia’s words are so poetic and it’s beautiful. If you are expecting a cute story about a Brave girl you will only get one of those things. Sol was dark and Moira was the sun. He tried in vain to hate her, but knew she was his the moment he saw her. He just didn’t expect her to be everything he could have asked for.
