4.25 stars - AMAZING AUDIOBOOK
Look,
I’m sentimental.
This is heartwarming.
I love it.
I don’t care if it’s very similar to A Man Called Ove. I enjoyed both immensely. This might actually be my favorite of the two.
This is a story about finding yourself. About choosing yourself. Like all of Backman’s books, this touches on the strings of finding independence and freedom in interdependence. On what it means to live in a community. On what it means to be an individual when you denied yourself that for so long. This is a book about love and life, and how you find both of them in the most unexpected and sacred places.
I just. Was so touched.
One thing -
I wouldn’t say I knew any of the children THAT well. But I still cared about them! And I do think Sammy’s death was quite sudden, and I’m not sure if he was fleshed out enough. BUT IT STILL HURT.

A fun read! At the beginning I found it hard to relate and root for Britt-Marie, nor did I feel much for the town of Borg, just as Backman intended. However, the way this story developed I came to feel so much affection for both Britt-Marie, a lost, middle-aged woman who has never lived for herself- in fact, she has barely lived at all; and for Borg, a town that has all but disappeared due to financial crisis, and is a ghost of its former self. Backman does a great job with slowly letting us under the skin of woman and town; their pain, their eccentricities, their beautiful traits, etc. I enjoyed this novel a lot!

This one was slow to start, but ended up breaking my heart beautifully, in only the way Backman can
Wonderfully tender but no "A Man Called Ove". I laughed at the people she met along the way and felt for Britt-Marie.
