3.5/4 This book is insanely long and I just enjoyed meandering around the US with Shadow. He is such a good character— i think the story only works because of him.
Honestly I skipped some of the chapters of the tangential storytelling. Otherwise ate it up.

I thought I'd love the book a hundred pages in, but the book ultimately didn't resonate with me enough, beautiful prose notwithstanding. I didn't 'get' it, I may be missing some allegory I don't have enough knowledge to understand, or perhaps there isn't anything to 'get'.
I look forward to the tv series. Maybe a visual will help; I've never been good with fantasy.

I read this book years ago and I seriously don’t know what the hell I was thinking back then because I did not like it. I’d read Neverwhere just before, so maybe I was just mad that it wasn’t Neverwhere?
Whatever I was thinking, this time around I really appreciated this story. It’s amazing—a real journey that unfolds with so many cool characters! It’s so good!!!

If you like character driven books you will probably really enjoy this book. There isn't a ton of plot, but the people you meet while reading the book are fairly interesting. I vastly prefer plot driven books, so this one kind of dragged for me. With the tv show coming out I thought the book was going to be an exciting adventure across the United States where we meet 'old gods' (i.e. norse gods, greek gods, etc.) and also the 'new gods' (god of technology, media, etc.). It was kind of that, except for the exciting part. The main character is always in the dark (which makes the reader always in the dark), but he also seems to not care that much. Also, for all the build up of this huge war/conflict brewing between the old and new gods, I was disappointed in the ending.
Hope it really does get made into a HBO series.
5 hours into the audiobook and not enjoying it at all, tbh, in spite of the cast recording. I was unpleasantly surprised, because I have loved the other four Gaiman books I’ve read, and I normally love myth retellings. This came across as heavy, boring, and weird. The main character was like an avatar, meaning he didn’t have much of a personality. Some of the myths felt like pointless inserts. Sorry, Neil :(
