Classic and yet not Classic Stephen King. Long book but I enjoyed every minute of it!

This was a fascinating and disturbing read on many levels. What happens if all the women go to sleep? The small Appalachian town of Dooling is about to find out. With men expressing a range of emotions and beliefs (from this is God's doing because women wear pants now to an urge to kill themselves without their loved ones), two warring groups emerge - the police vs. the prison officers. And what happens when they come to blows is only half the story - whether or not the women decide to come back from their female-dominated world is a whole other part of this book. Whether or not you enjoy the story, it definitely examines some of the crucial social issues happening today.

I really tried to get into this novel but it was impossible. The story just drags on and I have no attachment or care for any characters. There's just too much words that add nothing to the story. I've never felt so under stimulated by a book. This is my first time dnfing a book and I felt horrible doing it but I simply had to. This book felt like a chore to read and singlehandedly made me fall into a reading slump.

This is the first book I've read that's been written by King. I went in with too high expectations it seems, because, I was left disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I will probably read more of his books. He is after all one of the most successful writers of this generation. The writing was great and the way even the weirdest stuff seemed normal is a good indicator of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the political aspects of this book. It is hard to miss the parallels to the real world. Fake news, sexism, gender politics and choice. That was superbly done.

What made me borrow this book from the library was the premise. The concept, a world without one of the sexes, is fascinating. But, nonetheless, there were some things that made me like the book less. I think that there are too many characters in the storyline. Too me, most of them seemed redundant to the story and it made it harder to keep track of the storyline. Ultimately, the book was way too long. There were parts of it that could've been edited out without it affecting the story in the end. The story felt long-winded. I really had to force myself to read the last 200 pages.

I love King's (both) style, it's so human and real and fabulously worded. Liked this, got scared a bit, just slow.

So many characters it was hard to care about more than one or two, let alone keep up with all of the names. Still an enjoyable read and premise for suspense

It’s hard enough reading about the worst side of humanity in a 750-character Tweet, let alone a 700-page novel. I really enjoyed the fantasy aspect of this fantasy horror, I just wish the entirety of this book was from the women’s perspective. I also think the Kings left out important aspects of gender and sexuality that would have made this novel way more inclusive and dynamic.

I want to give this book 6 stars! This book was even better than I thought it would be, and I have high expectations for a Stephen King book. Great, complex characters; a premise that is unique, frightening, and hopeful; and a supernatural element that is expressed in unexpected ways makes this a must read, not just for King fans, but for anyone who is willing to explore themes of darkness and light, relationships and tensions between men and women in society, and the possibilities of starting over.
