This book took a while to grow on me, particularly because I read it in many more sittings than I should have, but it's fitting that I finish it today, June 22nd, on Octavia Butler's (and Ibi Zoboi's) birthday. Though at times I wanted to skim past the poetry, I loved the biographical prose, interspersed with quotes from Butler herself that lent themselves perfectly to the constellation this book presents. I love Butler's writings about herself, and I wished the whole book had been so much longer, to include more of them. The poetry was floaty and weighty at the same time, which is fitting for a book so much about the stars. I really did enjoy reading it, and I think this book's greatest feature is that it made me so excited to start reading Octavia Butler!

Good information about Octavia Butler. The poetry wasn't my taste. Felt the author did more telling me how she was than demonstrating than I would have liked

" STARDUST

What if on the day she was born
there was a quiet storm of tiny

shimmering dust that settled on
tree leaves, on flower petals,

on rooftops, on the ground, on
the shiny work shoes, and

glided through open windows
to settle on hardwood

floors? Maybe there was a
storm of stardust and

this was how Laurice James Butler and

Octavia Margaret Butler gave

birth to a baby girl named

Octavia Estelle Butler,

a star child."

This is a beautiful "biographical constellation" of one of the scifi/speculative fiction GOATs, and a must-read for fans of Ms. Octavia E. Butler.

A unique experience, Star Child combin is a biography-in-verse, with pages of prose peppered throughout. It's lovely, and I enjoyed the photos, pages of writing in Octavia's own hand, and Ibi Zoboi's personal experiences with the inimitable and pioneering Ms. Butler.

Song stuck in my head reading this:

Really like this format for a biography. I didn’t go into the book with expectations, just a love for Octavia E. Butler’s work. I liked how her own words were woven throughout the book.

The author of this biography, Ibi Zoboi, was born on the same day as Octavia E. Butler, 30 years apart. She felt like her writing was “weird” until someone introduced her to Butler’s stories. This biography is so uniquely told in poetry, quotations, photos and prose. If you want to know more about the founder of Afro-futurism, you should read this book!
