Was this penned by a ghost writer? What happened here?

Surprisingly boring and trite. I feel badly even stating this, as C.L. Wilson is a top-knotch Fantasy Romance storyteller, in my opinion. Alas, I realize that I will not love every book by a beloved author. Sadly, it took me weeks to finish this one as I wanted to DNF it many a time.

DNF. Everything that made the first book amazing was nonexistent in this one. The first one was an epic fantasy, full of action and romance. This book is so dry and redundant. Summer is such a manipulative, spoiled, and whiny little brat. She lies through her teeth, is a hypocrite, and is full of double standards. She’s nothing like Kham who was strong and brave. I’m stopping here so I don’t have to read about the upcoming sexual assault

I cannnoooooott handle how annoying Summer was. The lady doth protest too much…made me want to scream but the story and Dilys kept me going.

So so SOOOOO GOOD. I thought The Winter King was delightful, an still is! But this one has been my favorite so far! Just looked at C.L. Wilsons website to confirm if there will be a 3rd book, given how it ended, an there will be! I’m so excited!!

Could have done without the gratuitous sexual assault from the villains, yet there was still something compelling for me. I think it was the idea of distributing emotional load across partners and support systems, if a very fantasy literal way here. I also sympathize with the idea of being afraid of love and loss.

I enjoyed certain aspects of this book but some parts of it REALLY bothered me. I feel like ht author tries to make her female characters "strong" but then the male characters are constantly degrading them to sexual objects or treating them like children and it's maddening. The whole "i'm going to punish you for lying" or "i'll bend you over my knee and spank you" is eye-rolling. If a man ever said some shit like that to me I'd never speak to him again. This is a grown woman and he's speaking to her like she's a child.
And listen, I get that the author wanted to add some SA to what idk grow the FMC's character or something but it literally was so unrealistic how she dealt with that trauma. After being assaulted for literal DAYS on end she bounces back basically immediately and goes to having sex with the MMC with no side effects?? The only time it affects her is when other people touch her? BS. I would have found the book and characters more compelling if the MC's actually had to work through that trauma together with him not being able to touch her. THAT would have made more sense honestly
