This book is life-changing. I will be buying a physical copy soon. A lot of the information was hard to hear as I just didn't want to believe certain things took place. The more I listened, the more evident it became that these were things I needed to hear and recognize. I am so grateful this book exists and will be referring back to it often. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is about to embark on or is on their healing journey.

Absolutely fascinating and essential. A quote found within from traumatologist, John Briere sums the importance of this book up, “if Cptsd were ever given its due, the DSM [The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders] used by all mental health professionals would shrink from its dictionary like size to the size of a thin pamphlet.”

This is an incredibly insightful and indispensable guide to the treatment of childhood trauma. I found that while the book does focus on childhood trauma from abusive parents, much of the information and approach were beneficial to anyone with a history of trauma or even those without.

I am not recommending self diagnosis, but I think this book may be helpful to most people in understanding behaviors in themselves, partners or others in their lives, and will absolutely make the reader reassess themselves and others. I am so happy to have purchased a copy and not just borrowed from the library, as I will be referring back to certain sections and toolboxes regularly.

Highly recommended for anyone with childhood trauma, but still recommend for anyone with even a passing interest in mental health.

While not a victim of Cptsd myself, it helped me understand the plight of others who may be experiencing it. The text also provided tools and tactics for dealing with some of my own unrelated mental health complications. A worthwhile read for anybody with mental health issues, or those who may be in any type of relationship with someone who is. It will help you be empathetic to their needs.

This is another book that has absolutely changed my life. If someone has recommended it to you, or you've stumbled across it and are curious, let mine be another voice encouraging you to start reading it as soon as possible.

In addition to addressing the fallout in adulthood of an unsafe and/or unloving childhood, Pete Walker goes a step further than other authors and tells you what you can actually do about it. Practical steps to take towards healing and improving your life, as well as concrete waypoints you will find yourself at along your journey. This actionable advice makes Pete's book the one I'd recommend over others on the topic.

Walker is amazing for breaking down so many thought processes and physical sensations in a repeated, clear, descriptive way. I didn't always jive with his perspective on traumatizing parents because he has a very black and white "people who caused these problems are terrible and never had anything good to offer" and it's often so much more complicated. He also has some gender essentializing language and perspectives. But for the most part the tools in this book are incredibly helpful for working through the byproducts of repeated traumatic neglect or abuse. Googling Pete Walker's website will bring up a handful of articles that summarize the contents of this book and can be helpful quick stops for working with anxiety and critical thoughts/activated nervous system responses, and to get a feel for the tone of the book.

It took me awhile to get through this audiobook because I was really trying to hone in & absorb as much as Walker had to say as possible.

This book is fantastic. In my journey to love as Jesus loves, I’ve realized that should often be paired with understanding. Therefore, I’ve been doing my best to expand my knowledge of all types of people and what they could be going through.

I don’t think I have C-PTSD, but there are negative behaviors or beliefs I picked up in childhood due to having an angry parent in the household. (Who now is no longer angry but a shining example of a good parent). I found this book beyond helpful, and I would recommend it to anyone.

I read a lot of psychology-focused books in my work as a therapist, and this was one of the BEST I have ever come across. Informative enough for a clinician, straight-forward enough for a survivor, and packed with empathy and encouragement.
