I don't know, this felt like a cut rate "Pride and Prejudice" where the Mr Darcy type is actually autistic. The premise sounded cool, but I didn't really acre for the execution. I was glad to be done with it.

Initially I was not sure if I would pick this up but then decided why not as I love historical romance. Plus this has a hero on the autism spectrum.

Georgiana and Edward meet rather awkward during a party he is hosting as the Duke of Thornfield. He gets upset after a miserable day riding and wants to relax in his favourite chair away from people. But he is upset when he finds her there and she refuses to leave. They start to argue and frustrated, he threatens to kiss her to which she boldly dares him to do so. Then, they do and get discovered by his aunt. So, with not much choice, he does the right thing by announcing they are engaged.

She did not expect this but the alternative is bad: her family ruined and her sisters not being able to find matches. He has been trying to escape all the females clamouring to be his duchess and his aunt's declaration that he fid a bride by the end of the year. He feels trapped by it all.

Georgiana describes herself as a duck among swans because of her social awkwardness and other ladies call her plain. But I was wondering if it is one of those she thinks she is plain but she actually beautiful type of situations as Edwards describes her as gorgeous.

I did like her. She might be socially awkward but she isn't afraid to express her views or if she disagrees. She certainly isn't afraid to rebuke Edward or let him know when he is being too arrogant. Somehow, I liked their dynamic and the way they have similar interests but different personalities.

I was getting Princess Diaries vibes as Edward and his aunt Agatha get her ready to be a duchess: etiquette and history lessons, learning about social interaction and things to say, a makeover...but there are time jumps that skip over things. Moreover, they have an unconventional route to the altar as they marry in secret on his land and then do the grand ceremony in London for the Ton.

I thought this starts strong but then something felt weird, I think it was the writing. The later parts were nice to read though like how they settle into married left and Georgiana gains the admiration of his political party members. The scene where he explains him being autistic to her was lovely to read. It was brave of him to do it and I wished he confided in her sooner. He does grow into making some romantic gestures for Georgiana
Spoiler(I mean when he brings her to the stable where he rehabilitates abused horses and getting the chair for her beside The Chair)
.

I don't think he is a rake though and the title is rather inaccurate.

Edward is definitely on the autism spectrum and I'm here for it! Georgiana is such a sweetheart. I especially love how determined she is to make the best out of her situation and that she wants to prove that she can be a great duchess. However, having recently read Pride and Prejudice I couldn't help noticing the many similarities. Georgiana has many sisters, she enjoys walking and the second oldest sister has a tendre for the hero's bestie. Hmmm... sounds familiar. Oh, what is that? The hero comes across as unfeeling and aloof but is secretly passionate/ardently admires the heroine? Hmmm...sounds familiar.
There are many similarities between these characters and Jane Austen's characters but this did not disturb me too much since the plot wasn't all that similar. In comparison to other historical romances, the writing feels more ancient in the sense that this doesn't necessarily feel like it was written in the 21st century. The way the characters interacted made it feel like this book could've easily been written 200 years ago. Also, I thought it interesting how many refercences to (then) current events were made. Obviously, the characters would be talking about the ongoing political events in the same way we casually mention the pandemic. I felt like that was really unique to this author (of modern HR).

I was not sure whether to give this a 3 or 4 stars as the opening was quite rushed. I like the married-or-ruined trope just fine, but I usually require a bit more build-up before that event, not 5 pages into the book. However, the book got much better as it went on, and I ended up quite fond of both MCs by the end of it, hence 4 stars.
