More Than This is a heart-wrenching new adult romance from Jay McLean. It is the first in a series and I will definitely be checking out the other books.

Mikey has experienced one of the most horrific things I can ever imagining happening. In one night she lost every person she cared about. Everything Mickey experienced made my heart ache for her. While Mickey was experiencing the worst moments of her life, she was also meeting some of the best people of her life. Jake is such a sweet and smexy hero and his friends are a blast to read about. Watching them help Mickey through the horrors of losing her entire family, best friend, and boyfriend all in one night was an emotional roller coaster I never wanted to end.

This is my first book by this author but you better believe that I will go and read everything she has ever written. When I started reading I was next to my husband in the bed, at first I laughed and then for about 3 chapters or 4 in the tears started_ the snot and ugly type crying type of tears. A ya read, for all ages.

Well, this book didn't disappoint. The series has so much potential that I am dying to read more of and I loved the ending to it. The characters showed so much growth within each book and the relationships that were being created just made the series that much better for all the loose ends to be tied. I loved the relationship between the two main characters and how they overcome their differences.

More Than This is the second book by this author I have read, and both of them I really enjoyed until the end. Then the ending had something that kind of ruined it for me. I was reading this one and loving it, then in literally the last pages something happened that I didn't really understand why it was included. Something that made the last moments with this story not as good as all the previous one. Something that made me think this story is just good instead of great like I had previously thought. I still enjoyed it, I am still going to read the next book to see what happens with Logan, but it was just frustrating.

This is the story of Mikayla and Jake. Mikayla who lost pretty much everything in one night. That was a bit over the top at the time, but I just went with it. First she finds out her perfect boyfriend is cheating on her with her best/only friend right before prom. Luckily Jake sees this happen, sees her breaking down, and swoops in to help her. He and his friends noticed her before and really if not for his friend Logan she might not have found out about the cheating. He was drawn to her, so when she is hurting he just wants to help her. He takes her with him and his friends to go to their prom and have some fun times. Right from the beginning I loved all of these characters. Jake and his friends are wonderfully fun and kind people. They are a group of friends like you want in real life. People who will have your back no matter what, who are there for you when you need them and who are just awesome in general. I can't wait to read each of their stories to get to know them all a little more.

So Mikayla doesn't just lose her boyfriend and best friend, but everyone she cares about in that same evening. When tragedy strikes she is kind of lost, but Jake is still there for her. He wants to take care of her and help her however he can. Sure he is this big shot baseball player, or will be huge when he goes pro, but he is one of the nicest guys. You can see the two of them falling for each other through all the tragedy. Man Jake was so sweet. He cares so much for Mikayla and was wonderful through everything. He definitely wants to be with her, but also knows that she has to be ready for that. I loved him.

For her part Mikayla could be a bit annoying at times. She has this idea in her head that she has to be perfect before she can date Jake and she almost ruins a great thing. They are kind of together kind of not, but they never talk about anything significant regarding them. They never say what they are doing or where this is going, they just kind of make out at times (though no kissing which was very odd until late in the game when it was explained why) and...she could be a bit annoying. She was all I want to be whole and better to give myself to him, poor me, a bit of whining, and then suddenly she just figures everything out in an instant. Not really realistic, but I still was enjoying the read. Then in the last moments of the book something else was introduced and made me think why? Why did you have to go and ruin a perfectly good book in the last seconds? I won't spoil what it is, but it was out of left field for me. And it didn't make a lot of sense.

Overall I really enjoyed the story. There were some annoying moments, some cheesy moments, and an annoying addition at the end, but it was still a good read. Now on to read Logan's story. I hope there is not another frustrating ending in store for me.

3.5 stars. The audiobook performance was fine. The story was enjoyable enough. The writing was fine. Parts of the storyline irked me a bit but probably just my personal preference.

oh my god! 5 freaking amazing stars for this! BEWARE! Spoilers ahead!

I just love it when you pick up a book that you don't think you'll like a lot and you just get dragged into it because it's the best thing ever!!!!!

What an awful night for Kayla.... first she catching her boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend. Then she meets an amazing guy and his friends and has a wonderful evening with them only to return home to discover her family had been murdered.

That is some brutal shit right there.

Kayla was a strong as all hell character to keep going after what happened, lord knows I wouldn't have been able to if I were in that position so I loved and adored Kayla to a maximum!

The Good

Jake & Kayla Damn those two caused me some serious frustration and they didn't even kiss to nearly the end of the damned book! (But don't worry, there was plenty of steamy build up!). I actually loved that they didn't kiss. It showed that Jake was serious with what he wanted. If he kissed her, he'd want all of her but he didn't really know what she wanted so he had to refrain himself (even though it was pretty damn obvious that she wanted him!).

Their growth throughout the book was great. It was a steady build up of becoming friends first then lovers. I loved how serious about her he was and how protective. And the jealously was adorable. He definitely had some insecurities and I wish they could have been explored a little more.

Drunk Lucy Need I say more? Drunk Lucy was the best! Sober Lucy was awesome too. I'd love to read more about her relationship with Cam.

Dylan & Heidi They have the relationship that I LOVE to read about. Dylan is quiet but he loves outgoing Heidi more than anything and it extremely protective over her. I NEED to read something about them so I hope the author releases a book about them.

Logan oh Logan.... I can't wait until his book is released! Who is he in love with?
Spoiler Is it Heidi?
that would be freaking amazing if it was....

Jake's family What wonderful people. Taking in a girl they didn't know and who had nothing left and treated her like family. That was beautiful.

The Bad

Nothing bad. Obviously there were a few things here and there but nothing worth mentioning.

Standout Scenes

Kayla and Jake's first meeting and meeting his friends

Every drunk Lucy moment

The massage scene between Jake and Kayla

Every steamy scene between Jake and Kayla

James giving Jake the flowers to give to Kayla

Jake and Kayla finally seeing the light and Jake moving her stuff into his room

Painfully YA, Unrealistic, and Glorifies Unhealthy Jealousy

I found this book to be painfully YA.
If books centred around teen hormones, angst, and non-communication, you'll enjoy this book. I found myself only able to continue reading it out of a morbid fascination akin to that of watching a trainwreck, since that is what this novel seemed to be.
It follows the story of the main character whose boyfriend of 4 years has been cheating on her for the past two years of their relationship, which she discovers as she catches them en medias res. If this isn't bad enough, she goes home and finds that her family has been murdered, and the only logical solution is to live with a boy and his family to whom she has just met, to which I found myself painfully incapable of suspending disbelief.
Like so many YA novels, it promotes unrealistic relationship expectations and glorifies unhealthy relationship habits like possessiveness and extreme jealousy.
