A continuation of the Kate Daniels universe, now featuring a grown up Julie. She's back after an eight year absence, to save her foster mother, and in the process, reconnects with her foster brother, who is a bit of an enigma himself. Great start to a new series.

Finally got to read the whole book but know I’m desperate for the next book! It’s sooo good, I’m completely addicted!

What a brilliant start to 2021 :)

My head is spinning!!!

I haven’t been checking my social media for the last couple of months, with COVID and everything I’ve sort of avoided it.
SO I didn’t realise my dream unicorn was being written and the instalments shared on Ilona Andrews website!!!

Of course I’ve now binge read the 9 chapters that are available to read and have already set up instant notifications on Twitter so when a new instalment goes up I’ll be all over it!

It’s not just that my most coveted book is being written, it’s also how it’s being written. It’s everything I wanted for a Julie’s book and more. It has exceeded my expectations, which is massive considering the years I’ve been fantasising about this book.

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump this year but this was like a bucket of ice cold water was thrown over my head! I’m living and breathing for what happens next, I’m completely obsessed.

Ilona Andrews is never a let down. Treat it as a first in a series... Julia is changed but back.... All the characters you love.

This was a world of Kate Daniels I was super excited to pick up because I was curious about what happened to Julie at the conclusion of the series. This book does an excellent job continuing the story BUT the end definitely left me wanting more. I hope they write additional stories in the future they certainly left open the possibility.

3/22 update--re-read on audible audio. I really like the narrator for this one. Good work on all the distinct voices and the pacing of the story. Glad I nominated it for the Hugo even though most of the voters don't seem to care for paranormal or urban fantasy unless McGuire is writing it.

1/21 original review: I keep searching for an urban fantasy author whose worlds can draw me in the way that Ilona Andrews does. And there's just no one like them. The creativity and inventiveness, research, scrappy heroines with smart mouths, and the heroes who would die for them just continue to pull me in. And once there, fans never want to leave. Which is how this whole book got started as Andrews explains in the Afterword. 2020 was a dreadful year and out of that pain when the pandemic got serious in NYC a fan working in healthcare asked for more in Kate Daniels' world. And the husband and wife writing team delivered with this "Eight Years Later" centered on Julie Olsen-Lennart who is back in Atlanta and on a mission.

It's a mission with high stakes as so many of their heroines have to face and Julie does it with style, intelligence, and some really strong one-liners. Underneath it all is her caring heart and her desire to save her family and her city.

It's tremendous fun seeing all the older characters again who have not frozen in place but gone on to other things. The younger characters are caught in some old patterns but the end of this installment provides hope that they can break out of them. Fascinating mythology, thrilling fights, surprise appearances, and Julie's grit kept me turning pages. The main plot is resolved but all the groundwork is laid for a spinoff series, so I hope it does well.

There might be a very slight tinge of fan service here, but I'm a fan and I like to be serviced--so there.
On a final note-the artwork by Luisa Preissler is stunning. I hope to see more book covers and supplemental art by her.

A promising start to a new UF series by a beloved writing team.
Familiar world and characters, new and intriguing circumstances.
Pretty sure the rating will go up after more books are out and/or after a re-read.
Can't wait for more

I didn’t realize how much I missed this world until I was back in it again.

If you’ve not read the Kate Daniels series, it’s an urban fantasy that does magical murder mysteries in a post-apocalyptic America. Magic rises and falls in waves. It’s familiar settings (Atlanta and it’s surrounding suburbs) but also magical.

We follow Julie, Kate’s adopted daughter who left with Kate’s aunt at the end of the series to find her own way and learn magic.

Julie is familiar but she has changed, physically and emotionally. When she comes back to Atlanta, it’s home but it has changed too. Dynamics have changed and Julie finds herself navigating an Atlanta that is familiar but has also moved on without her.

There’s been a prophecy that Kate will die. If Kate is alerted to the danger, she will die. The only way to avoid this is Julie not telling Kate what is going on. I missed seeing Kate, but I completely understand why she is taken out of the story. And it gives Julie a chance to shine on her own.

Coming back to Kate Daniels is like putting on your favorite sweater. I loved seeing favorite characters, but if you are new to this series, there’s enough background info given that you won’t be lost. And maybe since it’s been years since I’ve read the original series, it was nice to have a refresher on who was who without it having a ton of infodump. I was happiest to see Derek again, but Hugh’s cameo was hilarious and made me eager for the next book in his series.

The main mystery of who murdered the good preacher is solved, but Julie still hasn’t stopped the prophecy. I’m looking forward to more books.

I had been waiting for this book for ages and I couldn't put it down, lost a few hours of sleep so I could devour it. It was great, I can't wait for more. I'm already counting down for the next one.
