So I've been waiting for months for this and it was awesome! I love the new landscape of Atlanta, I really love watching Julie interact with everything from her past, and I found Moloch a compelling new villian.

My only issue here was that honestly the book didn't feel long enough (and I'm not just saying that because I love Ilona Andrews and always want to read more). I think for as much as was going on with reintroducing characters and catching up on 8 years worth of developments, I needed to spend a little more time uncovering the plot and giving Julie a chance to feel her way around. With as quickly as things were moving the plot felt a little rushed particularly towards the end of the book. This isn't exactly surprising considering this was first just supposed to be a scene, then a serial, then a novel, and is now an entire new series. That's a lot to conceptualize, write, and publish in a a few short months, and I'm hopeful that the next book in the series will not only give me the thrill of returning to Atlanta and all these characters I love, but also get to travel a little more sedately to it's climax.

Overall though, I'm just thankful that House Andrews blessed the Book Devouring Horde with a new release during the insantiy that has been the past year. Reading this was a breath of fresh air and I look forward to so much more!

to be quite honest, this wasnt my fave and its not their best. i just hate it when that plot device thing is used in any book
Spoilerand they used it twice. its getting old.

also,
Spoileryou cant end an epic battle you spent ten books building up with little to no consequences, only to cancel even those consequences in a spin off series.

i just cant.

and there wasnt nearly enough derek in this.
Spoilerwhat was this beta ice wolfs thing? i felt like i didnt know any of these characters.

Spoilerim just getting old, probably.

I loved it. I can’t wait for the next 2 books. There were a few times that I forgot I was reading about Aurelia Ryder and that it wasn’t Kate. Overall though I loved it and I think it’s a great addition to one of my favorite series.

*** NO SPOILERS ***

Blood Heir is book one in the Aurelia Ryder series by Ilona Andrews. It’s part of the Kate Daniels world.

For those familiar with the Kate Daniels world this one is read after book #10, [b:Magic Triumphs|17333180|Magic Triumphs (Kate Daniels, #10)|Ilona Andrews|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1502893641l/17333180._SY75_.jpg|24064368]. This novel features Julie and Derek who we got to see in the Kate books, but now they are grown-up and both are new people with different names and life experiences.

If you haven’t read the Kate books than no worries. You could jump into Blood Heir as a a whole new series, though I recommend reading the Kate Daniels series first.

The Andrews team does a fantastic job recapping events, people, and introducing the world. For those familiar with the world, you will not find this tedious. They do such a good job weaving this information in that it feels like it was always meant to be.

In true fashion we have so much action, adventure, and a mystery. There is an overall ARC which is not completed here, but will continue in however many books the authors write for this series. I loved the feel, the pace, and everything about this novel. It swept me away. It was everything I expected and so much more. As a fan I had some giddy emotions; especially when we heard or saw old characters pop up. We learn new things about them and see that life goes on. We also get to meet new characters that are so interesting and unique. I'd love to tell you more, but each word, page, and chapter is a surprise.

As for the romance nothing happens, yet! There are hints that the dance may have started, but I'm not sure and I don’t think Julie aka Aurelia has noticed. Who knows yet what direction the Andrews team will take. Whatever direction they go it’s going to be a slow burn and build, which I’m all for. The Andrews team know how to build and I can’t wait for the ride.

The mystery in this one is captivating. We do the whole PI experience, but with magic and mythical creatures that it keeps you glued to the pages just wanting to know what will happen. Atlanta sure has changed too. We get the low down with Aurelia on the factions and it’s not what it was when Kate was patrolling and holding it strong. There are hints that things have changed in the Pack and Atlanta. I’m so curious to see what is going on with the Pack and in Atlanta.

Blood Heir is one addictive ride and one misstep could lead to disaster. I LOVED it!!

Audio 2021: The narration is AMAZING!! I was swept away. Found some new things I missed my 1st time. Loved the voices.

I enjoyed this, but it felt very... fan-service-y, for lack of a better word. Julie (now Aurelia) is ridiculously powered-up in every conceivable aspect, up to and including being breathtakingly gorgeous and a literal princess, and it makes it hard to empathize with her; she never feels in actual danger. Pacing-wise, a lot happened in the time between the end of the KD series and this book and it's clear that information is withheld from the reader (and in some cases from Julie, but mostly from the reader) in a puzzle-creating way that I find kind of... obnoxious. It's too hard to ignore the authors behind the curtain pulling the strings. Kate had secrets, but she didn't have all the answers. Julie, frankly, does - she's even got a magical pocket universe where she can get information from her evil-but-sort-of-reformed grandfather, plus her grandmother is an ageless magical queen regnant who's just a phone call away - so when she doesn't it's clear that information is being withheld and it's annoying.

There are also just too many fan-favorite characters (and new characters who are designed to be fan-favorite characters). The book is at its strongest when it embraces ambiguity - e.g. the Pack politics in Atlanta are clearly a mess, and either Julie's old frenemy Ascanio has become ambitious and reckless to the point of evildoing or there are hidden screw-ups that Julie doesn't know about yet - but pretty much everyone we meet is known and beloved and therefore in no actual peril. The villain is a literal baby-eating god from Arizona but the tension in the book feels lackluster, honestly.

I'm really hopeful that now that the setup is over and done with, we'll get to some actual plotting and drama in the next two books of the series. When all is said and done, I enjoyed the chance to spend more time with the characters.

This book, it is so, so good. Ilona Andrews writes such wonderful banter and has such a way of bringing laughter into tense scenes when needed and leaving them raw when that's what is needed. I laughed. I cheered. I cannot wait for more of this series. It was good to be back in post shift Atlanta. Some names I recognized were there but in new ways and we met so many new, fresh characters. I hope for a 10 book run plus novellas because each side character is so well thought out that I want more for each of them.

To be able to revisit the world of Kate Daniels in a brand new book has been the best gift! Even without Kate, herself, this novel is just a treat to read. Julie picks up not only Kate's kick-butt mantle but also her crusade to preserve life and decency in their post-apocalyptic, magic torn Atlanta.
Besides getting to see some of my old fictitious friends, I enjoyed the fast paced action and the fantastic world building best. I hated the fact that things between Julie and Derek were not tied up at the end of the book- nor did I find out what had actually happened to Derek to change him so. (I say "hated" but part of me is glad that there is still more to discover because surely, SURELY that must mean there will be a sequel. Please, please, pretty please let there be a sequel.)
If you are a fan of the previous Kate Daniel series I am fairly confident that Blood Heir will be something you would enjoy. It's not some milquetoast reboot- rather this book will capture your attention (and your heart) all on its own.
