OMG THIS BOOK WAS SO FREAKING GOOD AND THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who likes mysteries needs to read this book ASAP because it is like Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None but also a little like One Of Us is Lying. At first I wasn’t super into it but as it went on I literally couldn’t put it down and spent every moment of free time I had today reading this book and now it it 9:46 on a Tuesday and I haven’t started my homework yet

*******************MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVENT READ THE BOOK *********************************

IM NOT KIDDING

DONT DO IT

Ok so now I’m going to talk about how freaking insane that plot twist was. I’m not gonna lie the entire time I thought it was TJ because everything pointed to him but yet I thought that the author would think that the reader wouldn’t believe that because they loved him. So I was super pumped because I thought that I was going to get the mystery right for once. However, I also considered other possibilities like how in And Then There Were None the murderer was actually someone who faked their death (someone freaking spoiled that for me). So part of me didn’t put that past anyone. For example when someone attempted to murder Ben at the beginning I didn’t take him out of the running because he could’ve easily done that to scare people off. However, the second Meg found the diary and was reading it I knew it was the girl that Nathan had used except we never learned her name which was upsetting. And then everyone was dropping like flies and I was utterly terrified. I kid you not the last 100 pages I was terrified for the characters because I had no idea what would happen. And then all signs pointed to TJ AND MEG FREAKING SHOT HIM!!!!!!! And at that point I was just hoping that it was TJ so that Meg wouldn’t have killed him for nothing. And then on the boat with Minnie she seemed like a wreck so I was so scared that she was going to kill Meg AND THEN SHE FREAKING DIED!!!!! AND THEN IT WAS BEN BUT ACTUALLY NOT BEN BECAUSE IT WAS CLARES BROTHER DISGUISED AS BEN!!!!!!!!!!! I never saw that coming. That was freaking insane. AND THEN TJ FREAKING SURVIVED (thank goodness) and then they got off the island. That book was intense and I read that so fast haha. I will precede to recommend that to everyone now.

So I read this for a YA seminar class about mystery and horror and was really looking forward to it since It is a YA modern retelling of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None." While it is suspenseful, it does have a twist I wasn't expecting, it ultimately falls flat for me. I think the flat characters were a big problem, and in order to tell the mystery any characterization was left out. I was left with two characters at the end, that despite going through an almost 300 page journey with- I still feel like I didn't know. Plus they weren't half as traumatized as I thought they should be. I really wanted to like this book more than I did, but I just couldn't-I usually love YA but this one, eh I couldn't get into.

I don't know what took me so long to get into this book but man did I fly through it once I got started! I pretty much read this in one sitting. I had read maybe a few chapters a few weeks ago and then just sat down and read this on a Sunday and stayed up until 2am to finish it! I was slightly disappointed in the ending which is why it gets 4 stars and not 5, but it did make sense and it was a good twist. I was just a little skeptical. The drama and the suspense was unending though and I really loved it!

* SPOILERS ABOUT ENDING! IT WILL ABSOLUTELY RUIN THE BOOK FOR YOU!

Ok, my first question is how ON EARTH did he kill Ben and "replace" him without any of Ben's friends and family noticing? Did no one else on the island know him? Because the people from that should should have known him and how would they not be able to tell it wasn't Ben? Unless he just made sure not to invite anyone that knew who Ben was? Who knows. ALSO....who doesn't check a pulse?!?! Didn't the first time Ben/Tom had an allergic reaction his face got red and swollen? So if that killed him, they should have noticed he wasn't red or swollen or idk, had a pulse? That was the biggest thing that wasn't believable to me. Maybe that's just because I work in medicine so checking a pulse and evidence of an allergic reaction seems like the obvious first things to do.

I also just wish it weren't Ben/Tom but realistically it makes the most sense. There were so many things pointing towards T.J. I kind of wanted T.J. to be the crazy one at times, but I get that he was way too obvious of a suspect for it to actually be him. I also kind of wanted it to be Minnie who just went crazy on everyone. But, alas, it was Tom avenging his sister. I did love all the eggs/hints Tom dropped. Oh! and the fact that he had to think quick because Meg outsmarted him on checking the internet! She almost ruined everything!

There are some nights when you want to read a book with gratuitous violence. Having no Christopher Pike on hand, Gretchen McNeil's newest novel, Ten, really scratched that itch for me. Ten teens, convinced that they were traveling to a mansion on an island for a mega party, start turning up murdered, one by one. Slasher movie fans will probably enjoy this, just like I did. No, it isn't the greatest writing in the world, and the plot won't surprise you as much as you might wish, but Ten accomplishes just what it sets out to do: provide a creepy background, some contemptible secondary characters, a couple the reader can root for, and an ensuing bloodbath, all during a creepy storm. I read this at night before going to bed, and actually got scared to the point that I needed to put it down and think happy thoughts of puppies and kittens so I could sleep.

Ten weaseled its way into my mind, so that I really wanted to keep reading. The writing flows, so that the story moves along briskly. There was more drinking and sexual carousing than I felt comfortable with for high schoolers toward the beginning of the book, but that's probably why I never got invited to those kinds of parties in high school myself. I also had a hard time relating to most of the characters, but it's for the best since they get murdered anyway (spoiler alert, but not really, because you know it's coming, don't you!?). Overall, Ten was a fun read, although not one that touched me deeply emotionally or inspired me. It was simply a good scare.
