I really enjoyed this one. It had more gothic than horror but it was such an easy and loveable story. I really shipped the Daniel and Bram so much. Either way, I enjoyed Daniel's growth and outcome of certain someones. It was an easy and fast read and I have little to complain about!

If this is considered an average Darcy Coates book, I can't wait to read her good stuff! Really enjoyed this, as far as thrillers are concerned.
Daniel lebt bei seinem Cousin und hält sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs über Wasser, während er versucht, irgendwo eine Festanstellung zu finden. Er ist ein fürsorglicher Mensch, gibt das Wenige, das er hat her, um anderen zu helfen, bis sein Cousin die Miete erhöht und ihn von seinem Zimmer auf die Couch verfrachtet.
Als Daniel einen Zettel mit einem Jobangebot als Gärtner in Craven Manor erhält, ist er teils hoffnungsvoll, teils skeptisch, denn das Anwesen wirkt verlassen und wenig einladend.
Niemand empfängt ihn dort, nur ein weiter Zettel mit besorgniserregenden Anweisungen wurde in dem staubigen Haus hinterlassen: Keine Fremden dürfen das Grundstück betreten, der Zutritt zum Turm ist strengstens untersagt und seine Unterbringung im Garten darf Daniel nicht zwischen Mitternacht und dem Morgengrauen verlassen. Falls er ein Klopfen hörst, darf er nicht antworten.
Doch bereits nach der zweiten Nacht verletzt er eine dieser Regeln und die Dinge geraten ins Rollen.
Dass ich die Bücher von Darcy Coates liebe, ist mittlerweile kein Geheimnis mehr und auch dieses hier, hab ich binnen eines Tages verschlungen. Ihr Schreibstil ist besonders und erzählerisch warm - sie zeigt mehr, als nur über ihre Charaktere zu berichten. Man fühlt mit ihnen, hasst, liebt und gruselt sich mit ihnen und dabei steigert sich die Spannung mit jeder Seite, lässt einem aber auch immer wieder Verschnaufpausen. Die Story beginnt ruhig, entwickelt sich zu einer Geisterhausgeschichte mit leichten Lovecraft Einschlägen und wird zum Ende hin mit jedem Twist & Turn fesselnder, aber auch gefühlvoller, wobei die Autorin auf massenhaft Blut und Gore verzichtet.
Für mich ein absolutes Vergnügen - #CozyHorror Haunted House Story, aber auch eine über Geheimnisse, Geister, Habgier, Mitgefühl und eine außergewöhnliche Freundschaft.
Definitiv das am wenigsten gruselige Buch der Autorin, dafür aber eines, das mir richtig ans Herz gegangen ist. Leseempfehlung!

As far as wholesome gothic tropes go, this book had a number of great images and situational checkmarks. Creepy manor? Check. Overgrown creepy garden concealing a mausoleum and a number of lifelike, emoting statues? Check. Defamed family and one last heir who prefers the shadows and being shut-in than social convention? All reason and instinct being abandoned in favor of curiosity and no better opportunity? Murder, contained and concealed and wild lore surrounding it? Check, check, check.
I appreciated having a main character who really understood hardship without moping about his situation. His situation is relatable, and even though it’s frustrating to see a character allow himself to be walked all over, it’s realistic to a lot of people’s situations.
That said, the secondary antagonist—a fat, slovenly gamer who lives in filth and has an angry violent problem when he drinks—seemed out of place and unconvincingly meddlesome.
The writing, though not terrible, seemed repetitive. We get it. The garden was overgrown. He had to cut some. So he went to get some shears. So he could cut the overgrown vines, which would be pretty if they weren’t overgrown....etc.
Not bad. I wouldn’t say this READS like a horror novel, but some of the horror imagery and descriptions didn’t disappoint.

A fun little ghost story, often predictable but also spooky and atmospheric.
It’s hard to find good “clean” scary stories. So far I’ve read two of her books and I like that they’re just good “haunts.” This one had a few holes I felt…but still enjoyable.
First time reading Darcy Coates. I was drawn to the cover. The story was full of suspense, paranormal and excitement. I couldn't stand Kyle at all. From the first time he was introduced. Daniel and Mrs. Kirschner were awesome in the story. I love ghost stories in general. I plan to read more of this author.
