I don't know how I missed this book as a kid but I'm sure glad I found it as an adult. I loved it. It has every pirate cliche known to man, shiver me timbers, Long John Silver, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum, etc. but this is the book where they originated. It's a good adventure tale and I recommend it if you've never read it.
Still, I think, the best pirate novel written.
Silver is a versatile actor and anti-villain. I take issue with the alliances and re-alliances among the particulars, but for an adventure novel, it all works. Keeping track of it all can be a little confusing at the end, but one thing is certain: don't trust Silver. Ever.
I love it.
My only beef is with the ending. I feel like Stevenson ran out of steam the last two pages, and we don't get full closure on some of the characters involved. It makes one wonder if the author intended to write a sequel.
I, for one, am glad that he didn't.

I know this book has many fans and I apologize for rating this with 2 stars only. I didn't totally love the book. I found it lackadaisical which is strange for a book about finding a lost treasure. I didn't care for anyone. The navigation terms befuddled me. All I did was wait for the time that I'd eventually finish it, and when I did, what a relief. ( You may argue that maybe I didn't like it because this is too masculine or childish. I don't have any response to that.)
Every kid dreams of being a pirate I think. This book feeds that dream a bit. The dangers, excitement, the chaos of the life of a pirate, were all captured here. I think it was a fun story to pass the time and relive that childhood fantasy a bit.
So I now get where most of the pirate stereotypes are from. It's a cute book, and not sure what to say that wouldn't be a spoiler. The performance from the people that recorded it for audible was fantastic and the sound effects were just as good.
I found this surprisingly hard to read. All the dialogue is spoken in strong pidgin english and has a lot of old slang terms that no one uses. I ended up listening to the audio book while reading along

I wanted to read this because I finally finished the Black Sails TV show recently, and was interested to know the origins of the characters and what goes on to happen to them. The story is good fun and entertaining, but because I love the characterisation of Silver in Black Sails, the change in his character in this put me off a little. I love Flint being his parrot though. Jim is a good main character and works for the story. It’s a fun adventure.
