Orca grows up on a lighthouse island, away from civilization. When one day she discovers a cellphone washed up on the shore of the island, and tries calling one of the numbers on it, her whole, isolated existence turns upside down.
Since I’ve been following Abbie for a while, I knew going in what I signed up for.
Abbie’s love for period dramas shines very clearly through in this story, and the romantic vibes are on from the start.
And even so, my inner, pragmatic, semi-islander old lady has a liiittle trouble accepting some of the story elements. I won’t complain, because they fit the story, and if you view this as a romantic, whirlwind fairytale, there’s no problem.
And it IS a whirlwind. From the moment we meet Orca, to the moment she talks to Jack, to the moment she meets Adam, we’re taken by the hand and led every step of the story.
Abbie is (for the most part) a very efficient writer who doesn’t waste page space on unnecessary things, which I really like. And she’s excellent at mixing emotion, humor and action.
This book made me stop and think a lot, which is also something I like.
A very sweet, heartwrenching and warming story about family, friendship and love.

omg. I can’t even form thoughts right now, other than this was prob the best book I’ve read all year. It way exceeded my expectations, and I think it’s impossible for me to not love anything Abbie Emmons writes!
Thank you to Abbie Emmons and NetGalley for providing me with a free ebook copy of The Otherworld in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited with I saw that my request for an ARC had been approved. I jumped straight in and read it anytime I had the chance. It was GREAT.
The Otherworld is an amazing 3 POV character-driven novel that follows Orca, an 18-year-old girl that has only ever known life on her small island. She longs to discover the mainland but soon enough the mainland comes to her. I would highly recommend jumping blindly into this novel to experience Orca's discoveries with her and fall in love with her home, and with the people she meets along the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed the setting. The way Orca describes her lighthouse and the island was captivating. It felt like I was right there with her. I could see the landscape unfurling in my mind thanks to the detailed descriptions.
In terms of the characters, I appreciated the fact that no one was perfect. The conversations they had, and the emphasis on seeing all sides of the story, all felt real in a way I have rarely read. Everyone had flaws and made mistakes, but the genuine love between all of them always brought them back together in a very touching way.
This novel captivated me from start to finish, the five dozen highlighted quotes I keep going back to attest to Abbie Emmons's impressive way with words.
If you want an emotional Tangled meets The Summer I Turned Pretty, but set in the 90s and with seaplanes (and more importantly their pilots), The Otherworld is the novel to pick up!

While the premise was interesting I realize I'm not the target audience for this book.
Orca is very immature and sure, she's 18, and it was charming at first, but it became very frustrating very fast.
The author's prose is the reason I stuck with this book for as long as I do. Her writing can be super vivid and engaging, full of rich imagery.

First of all, the vibe of this book was Tangled meets The Little Mermaid on the rainy Washington coast. Immaculate. I breezed through the smooth and pretty writing and enjoyed the romance.
However, there were a few major relationships in this book which seemed very unhealthy even though the end seemed to imply that everyone had good motivations.

So I enjoyed Abbie's first book and her Christmas book so I was looking forward to this book. I like the premise but as you can see with my rating...it did not go well. If you love a sappy romance book, go ahead, just be aware that love in this book confuses infatuation with what love actually is. But what frustrated me the most is that this book is a romantisation of a world where a woman's role is to serve a man, whether her husband or her father..in this case both...
