Reading journal entry (not really a review).
———————————————————————————————
Tried reading this a couple years ago after finishing PJO for the first time. I only read the first couple chapters and never continued. Picked it up again the other day and read along a physical copy while listening to the audio book. It really helped me stay focused.
Growing up and living on Long Island I notice things that characters say that aren’t fully accurate. They aren’t important things! Just little things here and there with phrasing. For example, every time someone says ‘Long Island Sound’ we usually would put the word “the” before it. In Chapter 52 Piper says “If you even try to make a move, I will load you into a catapult and shoot you across Long Island Sound.” Long Islanders would actually say “shoot you across *the* Long Island Sound” or (we might shorten it by just calling it ‘the sound’) “shoot you across *the Sound.*” Now, is this a big deal? Of course not! All of the maps I’ve ever seen have the sound labeled as “Long Island Sound” so how can one expect a non-local to know how we would phrase it? I’m just happy my home is included in such a loved universe.

This book was a lot of fun to read, full of adventure and excitement and all those good things. I knew I was going to be entertained, but I wasn't sure if I would like the new characters that were introduced. A tricky thing about revisiting an old story like this is that some people may want the old characters back and not care about the new ones. Surprisingly I cared for all three of the new characters introduced. I wanted to see what happened to each of them. It helped too that several of the old characters from the original series were back again, and I have a feeling the next book will feature them as well as the new kids even more. Can't wait!

Initially I felt like this was far too long a book for how little was happening, but gosh did it pick up in the last third! The end of every chapter left me craving more.
However, whilst I loved being back in the PJO world, I did not feel the same connection with Jason, Piper and Leo as I did with Percy, Annabeth and Grover. That said, I really enjoyed how much character progression we got in just one book, especially Piper breaking the stereotype of the Aphrodite kids (her interaction with her mother was so interesting to see a different and deeper, more complex side to the Goddess of Love than we see in the original Percy Jackson series), and I can’t wait to see how much more they grow throughout the rest of the series.
Mostly I am just excited to (hopefully) be reunited with Percabeth in the next book!

I am absolutely kicking myself for not having read this series sooner. I loved the Percy Jackson series and it seems like I'm going to love the Heroes of Olympus series. This books started off strong and ended strong. I thought I'd have a tougher time connecting to the new characters in anticipation of wanting to read my usual duo (Percy and Annabeth). But this main trio was amazing! I enjoyed reading in all three of their POV's, but I have to admit that I do have a favorite and that was Leo. Leo Valdez the cutie pie that you are! He stole my heart. I enjoyed every second of this, and am just as intrigued and eager to read the second installment, as well as the rest!
