Special Agent Robert Hunter and his partner, Carlos Garcia, are on the heels of another horrific serial killer known as The Executioner. Each victim is killed in horrific ways that appear to align with their worst fears and the clock is ticking before he strikes again. Robert and Carlos have to use every bit of their wit to catch this killer.
Out of the three Robert Hunter books I've read so far, this is my favorite. The kills were horrifying and gruesome. The way Chris Carter is able to describe the scene and the emotions really strikes fear into you as a reader.
Every book in this series so far is fast paced, high anxiety, and a lot of fun. It's hard to put them down.

Just finished The Executioner by Chris Carter, and I’ve got to say — this one really gets under your skin.
The scene descriptions are incredibly detailed. At times, it felt like I was right there, which sounds great… until you realise what you’re being shown. I actually physically winced more than once — it’s that intense.
The short chapters make it so easy to fly through, and the pace doesn’t let up. It’s one of those books where you tell yourself “just one more chapter” — and suddenly you’re 100 pages in.
It’s also genuinely sickening in places. Not in a bad way — just properly grim and twisted. If you like your thrillers dark, this one delivers.
Now, Monica’s storyline? At first, I wasn’t sure. It felt a little disconnected, and I struggled to really believe in it. But by the end, I was fully invested — it actually turned out to be one of the more interesting parts.
And yes, I thought I’d guessed the killer at 53% — and somehow I was both wrong and right. No spoilers, but that reveal definitely caught me off guard. I did not see that coming at all.
Overall, it’s a solid 4 stars. Disturbing, fast-paced, and addictive — just maybe don’t read it over dinner.
Imagine your worst fear - and then meet your worst nightmare...
Inside a Los Angeles church, on the altar steps, lies the blood-soaked, decapitated body of a priest. Carefully positioned, legs stretched out, arms crossed over the chest, the most horrifying thing of all is that the priest's head has been replaced by that of a dog. Later, the forensic team discover that, on the victim's chest, the figure '3' has been scrawled in blood
A killer who uses your worst fear to kill you ..... I don't know what Chris Carter puts in his books (other than fabulous characters and horrendous murders) these books race along, super short chapters that make you feel like you are racing through the story.
Absolutely loved this one, possibly more than The Crucifix Killer, bring on the next.

This was a brilliant follow-up to the first book in the Robert Hunter series. It’s fast-paced, with short, punchy chapters that make it really easy to fly through. I found myself constantly saying “just one more chapter” — and then reading five more!
As with the first book, it’s dark, gruesome, and seriously intense. Chris Carter doesn’t hold back, and the twists kept me hooked right to the end. If you enjoy gritty crime thrillers with clever plots and a bit of a stomach-turning edge, this is well worth picking up.
Absolutely five stars from me — I’ll definitely be diving into the next one soon!

Well, that’s a start to a book that won’t be forgotten. Someone, for the love of god, needs to bring this series to the big screen! imagine the scene setting for Mr Vicar?!! , followed up by the writing on the wall (which freaked me out so much!!)
Hunter is firmly becoming one of my favourite detectives, I love his interactions with those around, especially Molly in this book and how they all figure out what is going on. The short chapters had me racing through this and the twists kept me hooked.
This is dark, violent, gory and not for the faint hearted! Roll on the rest of the series.
