4 Stars!

I love Mia Sheridan. I have read all of her books so far, and I enjoyed every single one. A few of them are on my favorite bookshelf.

Even though I loved this book, it wasn't my favorite. I liked the open ending and all the possibilities you can imagine after finishing reading, but I didn't like the confusion and questions I was left with.

It took me a little to get into the story at first, it was kinda slow, but also it helps to understand everything better after the first twist about the middle of the book. I loved that twist, it made me so excited to keep reading and knowing what was going o happen.

I loved the characters and the writing of this author, as always. The hero and heroine were well developed, and their background stories were deep and interesting. The dual POV helped to understand some things but also to get confused about other.

The sex scenes were awesome too, Mia Sheridan always make sure to mix steamy moments with deep emotions and feelings, so the result is pretty intense. Sometimes maybe too intense, depending on the case.

The ending was a mindfuck. I didn't know what I read at first... I'm still not sure. That's a good thing, but also a bad thing, in my opinion. Maybe the execution of the initial idea wasn't as successful as it should have been, because I think the premise was brilliant and it had the potential to be fantastic, but the feeling I had after finishing wasn't so good.

There were flaws, but afterall it was a nice story, entertaining and interesting, and something different and original.

I’m just so confused

This author is one of my favorites, and I have never read a book of hers that didn't consume my heart and soul. After finishing Midnight Lily, I felt indifferent. I didn't dislike the book but never felt a connection to either main character. This is one everyone will have to read for themselves and decide how they feel about it.

Spoiler I knew the first and suspected the second plot twist, but never the final one. I didn't feel moved by their story after everything was said and done. There has been much debate about what was real and what wasn't, but I just didn't care.

The beginning of the story will get you intrigued and makes you turn a page right after another. You will be blown away with the twists. You will think, after a few chapters when Holden met Lily, that you know what comes next, boy you will be in for a surprise. Holden is a famous quarterback for the 49ers and was brought by his teammate Brandon into his secluded cabin in the middle of a forests faraway from everyone, to recover from something. Is he a recovering drug addict? Is he escaping from his crazy ex-girlfriend? Is he just taking a break from it all? Is he going to just camp into the wilderness outside the cabin to feel nature? So many questions inside my head during reading his story. Holden fell in love with Lily but something happened that they need to come back to reality. A reality I’m not expecting! Hey, when I turned started on a new chapter, I was first confused that Im reading the same book. So I kept reading and boom! I cant’t believe how the story turned out. But it doesn’t end from that one twist, you have to keep on reaading follow their love story and discover that being in love finds the imperfections of the one you love to be perfevt or a match for your imperfections. And together, you will face the future healing everyday, stronger and full of trust and love for each other.I still like the author’s work, Archer’s Voice, better.

On finishing this book, I was so confused. Enough that I kept putting off writing the review. Now, about ten days later, I've most likely forgotten half the review-relevant details so I'm going to have to work with what I remember and what I can recall.

The book follows a man named Holden Scott. He is a professional football player who, due to a recent tragedy, had gone off on quite a bender. To help him get himself back together, a friend offers him a remote lodge to relax for a month. There, he meets a beautiful girl. But she only meets him at night and he can never seem to find her himself. He falls in love without knowing if she's even real.

Which, I have to admit, is mystical and curious and very intriguing. Mia Sheridan writes many unusual stories and she usually manages to pull them off. Like she did this time, but not entirely.

The story was really good, the characters were complex and I loved reading about them. The writing was good, and there was a twist that was freaking awesome. This was a short book and well paced. The part where the book suffered, for me, was how quickly the two protagonists fell in love.

Now, I'm not one to put a time requirement on love. Being someone who believes in true love about as much as faeries, I'm willing to accept two people falling in love in a weekend if the author does it right. And here it wasn't done right. It seemed as if they had a few conversations and then professed their eternal and undying love for each other. Why couldn't they have just really liked each other or felt a deep connection. Did it have to be love? Does it always have to be love?

And if you say that it does, then make me believe it. Because I didn't believe it here.

Other than that, I had some minor issues where things got confusing, but most cleared up and others are for deliberation. Besides, I can't write those things because they're spoiler territory. Also, I think there were times when the dialogue became of the people-do-not-talk-like-that-in-read-life variety, but I can't be sure (curse me, and my procrastination!).

Overall, I liked this book. It was very different from most romances and the ending was refreshing. It was imperfect and surprisingly realistic, which made it hopeful because that's something that you might actually get. It had a lesson to it, delivered in a strange way. So if you're up for something a bit weird but a lot interesting, I recommend you give this book a shot.

I love Mia Sheridan's writing and how much she makes you feel for her characters. Midnight Lily is no different as she slowly introduces us to Lily and Holden, creates a chemistry between them, divulging their secrets and pasts, making us care for them as individuals while rooting for them as a romantic pairing. I won't be spoiling anything by saying that we are left wondering exactly who (or what) Lily is, as the synopsis asks: "Is she a dream? A ghost? A product of his muddled imagination? Or something entirely different?" Answers will come, and more than one. I will only say I didn't love all of the answers I got, and I felt some real sadness, a sense of loss not everyone who reads this will feel. Not to say I wasn't glad I read it... I really am. And kudos to Mia for being so imaginative.

I had originally given this story a 4-star rating, but after sleeping on it, I found that it left me confused and feeling that the epilogue unnecessary, which took away the magic of what had been a beautiful, angsty story. In truth, I feel duped.

Furthermore, the fact that I had to go searching for an explanation of said epilogue (outside of the story) was really off-putting. It wasn't pleasurable to be left confused and with more questions than answers at the end. In my opinion, the epilogue was overkill (and it killed my feelings for the story).

Still, it was a pretty mindfuck (until it wasn't) so I'm giving it a 3-star rating for imaginative, atmospheric, and emotional writing, even though the end was an epic fail for me.
