Weaving through a backdrop of England and, more specifically the opening of a play "The Last Amazon of Dahomey", this book takes the reader through the lives of different women. In the beginning, I really struggled with this book because there are so many characters to keep track of. However, I found myself investing as I entered the second part of the book because I could relate to so many facets of each new character. I can't really say that I have a favorite character, but I can say that Evaristo can create a believable character that has solid attributes, both good and bad. I would recommend this book to anyone who is on a journey of self-discovery or enjoys fabulous character development.

Girl, Woman, Other follows the lives 12 characters - mostly women, black and British, spanning almost a decade.

It took me a little while to get into as I thought this was just a regular novel, not 12 interconnected short stories (I have a bad habit of starting books without knowing anything about them). Once I did get into it, I found it very engaging and sped through it.

Apparently the prose is a little difficult to get used to, but I listened to the audiobook so I didn't have any trouble with that.

Loved the interlacing narrative, the representation, and the pacing. The final chapter was especially touching.

This gives a glimpse into many people, all loosely connected and mostly Black British women. It showed the diversity of experiences regarding race, sexuality, aging, and family. Great characters, but by the end I forgot who was who! It also had about 5 characters too many, I'd say. It got quite long and sloggy for me, although each character was totally unique and interesting. I did not think the 'poetic' style worked--the lack of periods made parts confusing and the line breaks were scattered and mostly didn't add anything.
