I forced myself to finish this for my book club, but it’s not my thing. Way too dry for me. Rather than following a few interesting storylines this author tried to do it all and ends up with very little. It’s like reading ESPN. 😉

This was an inspiring story about a deaf high school football team’s drive and resilience. I really enjoyed learning about deaf culture throughout the book—especially the moments that highlighted how being deaf is actually an advantage in many situations, particularly in sports where visual communication is key. There was also a lot of interesting history about how deaf children have been treated and educated over the decades (mostly very poorly, surprising no one). This is a great sports narrative and if you like football, I think you'd really enjoy this (I admit, sometimes my eyes glazed over a little during the football coverage!). I love how this team was able to reinvent the game to win on their own terms.

If you like Remember the Titans, you will love this book 😂

This story practically writes itself! A football team from an all-deaf school makes it to the state championship, only to lose, then spend the next season in quest of redemption. However, the author provides key context in certain spots about the players, coaches, and Deaf culture as a whole. I learned a lot and really gained more perspective about how deaf people live in our society.

As a mom of boys, I would prefer my kids not play football lol. I spent a lot of the gameplay scenes feeling anxious that the boys would be injured. (And some are.)

The only thing I wish for is an updated epilogue in a few years about what all these players went on to do (yes, like Remember the Titans 😂)

The audio version, read by the author, is really great.

As it appears on my Facebook page, Moni's Reading Journey.
This was such a good book. I am not a big fan of American football, but I love inspiring real life stories about the underdog becoming the hero and the inspiration. I read a lot of non-fiction and this type of books are always rated as 5 🌟 or 1 🌟, meaning I totally loved or completely hated them... this was amongst those books kinda in the middle and the reason it lost one star was solely that, though about the sport, I felt that it dissected too much each game! Like, if you don't understand and don't care about this sport, you wouldn't care about this book. It should have focused more on the way the players and their families felt, how this turn of events turn their lives around... don't get me wrong, it had elements of that, but the author didn't go deep enough. All other good books in this genre focused more on the soul part of this journey vs the description of each game or event. Example: The Boys In the Boat. Absolute perfection! This is why this book is not as popular as the other and why I feel many not interested in football would not read this one.
I personally can only recommend it to people interested in the sport vs anyone who wants to read a good non-fiction.
Happy reading, everyone!
