I felt that this was a confused book. I didn't end the story feeling anything different for Ged or for Arren. Meeting dragons from legend and crossing the barrier between life and death should have been huge events. But they felt a bit flat.
The major lesson in the book for Arren, who repeatedly doubted Ged, his power and magic in general, should have been the discovery of the importance of the Balance and what can happen when it is violated so severely. This would be a massive thing for a future king to take away and understand. But we weren't left with that impression, which feels like a waste.
I did really enjoy seeing more of the world, and I did enjoy the depiction of all of the people who were affected by Cob's actions - showing what life is like when you lose hope and direction in life. Drugs, drink, petty crime, bickering and always people looking to take advantage.

I was not expecting this book to be as heavy as it was. Le Guin masterfully tackles the ideas of death as an inevitable part of life and how we cannot run from it, and thus, should cherish it as much as we do life itself. Her writing is so beautiful and evocative, and as always, I fell in love with the main two’s dynamic and found myself so emotional by the end.

so far, this feels like the most "epic" and "adventurous" of the series, with a quest and dragons and all of that that makes me think of fantasy stories. despite that, it is still written in ULG's unique style that is very grounded to the reality of her world. this story does provide a glimpse into the life in earthsea that is less contained in Ged's story or in one person's life like Atuan was. you see some of the grief that characters who live in this world are going through, and there parallels of that that you can see even in our lives today.
A classic coming-of-age quest saga in which a young prince joins forces with the wizard of Earthsea, Sparrowhawk, to go in search of the reason why magic is disappearing from the world. Le Guin typically conjures up vivid lands and societies as the two men go on their journey, facing all kinds of threats as well as dragons.
