The amount of times she referred to the 28 year old man as a child drove me a bit crazy. I get there’s an age gap, but as someone in their mid-twenties, it was a bit annoying. My only complaint, otherwise absolutely adorable and emotional story.

The best romance book I read so far this year... I was grinning ear to ear, I almost die of laughter bcs of Bri and Doug, I cried, I was angry, I was shouting girl power! This book moved me in so many ways the diversity of relationships here is mwa!!! I love it so muchhh!!!! Love follows you. Goes where you go. It doesn't know about social divides or distance or common sense. It doesn't even stop when the person you love dies. It does what it wants.

No one is more surprised than I am to find how much I truly enjoyed this book. I don't even know where to begin, so I guess this is as good a place as any. I have seen this book floating around for so long. I've heard so many people hype it up and call it a favorite book of all time, but I was never drawn in by the synopsis. On a whim, I decided to do a romance reading vlog of popular romance authors, and this is how it went...

I didn't start out loving this book. I am not a huge fan of the one night stand/ booty call trope, and I don't want to read about relationships that are just about the sex. So, I honestly wasn't sure how this was going to go for me. There were things I liked, but I wasn't sure if I could get past some others. To elaborate on

The Things I Hated
- One Night Stand/ Booty Call Trope
- Alexis' family, friends (minus Bri), and ex (which of course I'm supposed to)
- The miscommunication or lack there of (I just didn't feel like Alexis was being as open with Daniel as he was with her)
- How long it took Alexis to stand up for herself and stop living her life for other people
- Some of the writing during intimate scenes made me gag

but at the end of the day (and again this is shocking to me) those things could not outweigh

The Things I Loved
- The small town setting of Wakan, Minnesota
- The way the people of Wakan were like a family, always taking care of each other
- The angel, better known as Daniel Grant and the way he thought making a big deal out of Alexis coming to see him even before they knew they were it for each other
- The farm animals, from Chloe the baby goat with pajamas to Kevin Bacon the pig/ town mascot
- The Princess Bride and Disney movie references/ easter eggs
- Don't judge me, but that ring light scene was hilarious and marked a turning point for me in the book!

So at the end of the day, I can't understand why anyone would rate this less than 4 stars. In fact, I'm giving it a 5. This may be one of my favorite books I've read this year.

Just couldn't connect with this one — in the end, it all was a bit too much of the Cinderella story for me.

Daniel was just a tad too perfect and also just too passive. He complains about not meeting Ali's friends and family but it also takes him the entire book to get off his ass and just meet them on his own terms.

You know I'm not here to always hate on the FMC's (the men can be just as bad! stop being delusional) and I don't even feel like I can properly hate on Alexis because she was just so unrealistic. Here's this 38 year old woman: she's rich as fuck, has worked in hospitals all her life, is invested in her patient's lives but also — wait for it! — doesn't know what a broom is. Girl???

All the side characters were really one-dimensional and I could've told Alexis the solution to her problem from like page 50.

Not the book for me.

  • A one night stand/rebound turns into something more
  • Small town romance
  • Cute animals 🐐🐕
  • Deals with several kinds of abuse in relationships very tastefully
  • Fantastic narration (Julia Whelan enough said, and Zachary Webber I looked up after finishing)
