Well besides the fact that I figured out who the killer was close to the beginning, the book was really interesting. I don't blame the author, I just read too many mystery books so for the most part am good at predicting the "twists". It was cute and well-written with some complex themes mixed in--McManus did a good job at balancing all the characters and making each one feel rounded.

I loved the plot even though I guessed the culprit half way through. I fell in love with the concept of reading four different POV while not knowing which one was the unreliable narrator. Great character development and good pacing.

2.5 Stars - #52booksin52weeks Prompt #1 - Locked-room mystery

I love locked-room mysteries but should have chosen a different one. Not because this is poorly written or anything like that. I just don't typically enjoy teen/young adult books and should have paid more attention. But, I heard so many good reviews and would recommend this book to people who enjoy Young Adult because it is clever.

The story revolves around a death that occurs during a detention with the students in the detention being the only real suspects. I thought the author did a great job of planting the question in the reader's mind about why were these particular students in this detention.

We then follow the students as they try to figure out who did it and all the social anxieties surrounding the secrets they're trying to hide and why there were secrets in the first place. This is key to understanding why the death, the students, etc. are involved in this. The police were semi-incompetent (not looking at all possibilities) and the media were relentless which added to the stress and anxiety the students were feeling.

Overall, I thought the story was fine. I did figure out who did it early in the book but there was one twist at the end that I thought was extremely clever and didn't see coming. Kudos to the author for that!

I usually like YA books and this one was just ok. I may just be too far removed from that age group to have embraced this book. I thought that many of the actions and reactions of the teenagers were realistic and the story was believable. Five people in detention one afternoon and only four survive it. Which one is the guilty murderer? The mystery part was good and was not obvious from the start. The angst that accompanies life in high school seemed real and not overdone. I did find that the story dragged a bit in the middle and often found the switch from one voice to another a bit distracting. I often had to look back to see who was actually giving the commentary. Decent quick read
