Yukon Ho! (Calvin and Hobbes #3) by Bill Watterson – You would be hard pressed to find a Calvin and Hobbes collection that wasn’t magical! Happy Reading!

Yet another among the books published by Bill Watterson from the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip that I have enjoyed. My children have literally worn out these collections of C&H comics, and with good reason. C&H is a unique blend of homespun philosophy, side-splitting humor, and insight into the human (child and adult) condition. Watterson's insights into, and sly digs at, various social, familial, and other institutions of modern life are masterful.

Fantastic. I has been almost two decades since I read through the Calvin and Hobbes books and they are not only holding up to my memory of them, but exceeding it. Even as a non-parent I find them to be charming and delightful. My favorite parts are when his parents give in to his beliefs about Hobbes - ie his mother kissing Hobbes goodnight. Also it seems sad that Calvin chooses not to interact with other kids very well. Still, the relationship between him and Hobbes is epic and wonderful. Recommend? Read them all.

This is my favorite comic strip EVER! It is soo much fun to read and I never get tired of it! There is truth to what Calvin says and wisdom in a way that I can not explain. Calvin is such a great character and has such imagination that kids don't really have as much in todays world. I always find it funny that he believes Hobbes is real whe in fact he is just a stuffed tiger.

There are no bad Calvin and Hobbes collections, only ones that we prefer less than the others. That said, Yukon Ho! isn't a favourite of mine, but it isn't bad.

The title arc here is surprisingly long, and has one of my favorite moments from Calvin's mom (she calls for Hobbes after Calvin loses him in the woods. It's very endearing). And while Watterson had his art really figured out by the end of the first book, and it was even more dialed in in the second, there's a sense of movement now that shows a mastery over the medium. There's also a great meta-strip about copy-pasting art. Also, we get the first (very, very brief) appearance of Stupendous Man.

DEFINITELY my favorite Calvin and Hobbes collection so far.

The title storyline "Yukon Ho!" was wonderful and cute. We see how reality and fantasy intermingle in Calvin's mind in a way that past strips didn't explore.

And there was a Christmas storyline closer to the end that was amazing. Calvin asks questions about Santa and then the story subverts it in such a way that we realize Santa is a metaphor for God and the Christmas presents represent heavenly reward. I loved it and I love how Pascal's wager is hidden there in the last strip of that storyline, but replaces belief in God with belief in Santa instead.

This is brilliant stuff. And you know, some of the other strips in this collection was just straight up laugh-out-loud funny.

Final Rating : 5 stars and then some.
