If you’re a fan of books like Station 11, this will be right up your alley. I loved it.

I like dystopian fiction, (silly to say it like that...), but this was a horrible slog of a book, I kept hoping it would take a turn and finally get interesting, but I've read more interesting true life accounts of wilderness from people on the Appalachian Trail. With the whole possibility of making a fictional dystopia, it seems such a waste for such limited scope.
Vivid descriptions of nature, beautiful imagery, sounds like California based on plant types?…along with an interesting premise of a group of people in a not so distant future who leave the City (singular, seemingly the entire country except for one state) to live in the Wilderness State - the last remaining natural environment. That story is interesting in itself, but not nearly as captivating as the relationship between mother and daughter (and grandmother and granddaughter, etc.)
Felt long and rambling in parts, and over all not much really happened, but I didn’t ever get the feeling I wanted to stop reading. I liked it.

Overall, I enjoyed the book; but at times, the pacing dragged. Also, I found the return to Anges and Bea’s relationship over and over again to be tiring.
One thing I didn’t like about the book was the vagueness of “The City,” and other parts of the world. It struck me as lazy. Just leave these vague placeholders like city, mines, manufacturing zone, and let the reader fill them in with their own imagination.

IN THE BEGINNING, there were twenty. Officially, these twenty were in the Wilderness State as part of an experiment to see how people interacted with nature, because, with all land now being used for resources-oil, gas, minerals, water, wood, food-or storage-trash, servers, toxic waste-such interactions had become lost to history.
When the very air that we need to survive has become poison to many living in the cities, a group take the extreme decision to give up all the benefits of modern life to live in the last remaining wilderness on the planet.
The Wilderness State is patrolled by Rangers who ensure the twenty, dubbed the 'Community', do not disturb the natural world they are now inhabiting. The group must abide by the rule of the 'Manual', not staying in the same place for too long, ensuring they clear any debris or micro-trash, and that they only interact with the native animal species when hunting for food, when they must use the whole animal to make pelts, tools, clothing and camping equipment.
Often losing one of their number to the many dangers of the Wilderness, the Community continually travel between 'Outposts' where they must check in and provide data for the experiment.
However, their existence is thrown into chaos when they find out that a new group have been allowed into the Wilderness, causing power dynamics to shift. With news of an increasing decline in the state of the cities, the group must continue their long walks whilst coming to grips with the fact the Wilderness state might not be as empty as first thought.
A stunning book that is a terrifying view of an all too imaginable future for humanity. It explores human need and greed, abuse of power, and the hopes of younger generations to change the world for the better. I will re-read this at some point as I suspect there are hidden layers that won't be revealed until you go back over the story a second time. 5 stars!

I hated this book. It doesn't make any sense at all, and the only memorable character is an awful person who makes questionable decisions.
More than that: it really feels like the author doesn't spend enough time in the actual wilderness, because a lot of what goes on in this book doesn't do any justice to how people actually survive in the wild.
It was so, so disappointing.
