Another great book in this series! I felt like the end was a little rushed. I love miscommunication but I didn’t have enough time to feel the hurt at the end with it ending so quickly. I also would have loved to see Sophia tell Skithand that she saw his recognition of matehood (black eyes) and have it play out that way. Have some mistrust show up and then conclude with some good relations 🤪

No really, it’s her best writing yet.
Damn! So good! I cannot WAIT to see what’s next in the series. I love these characters so damn much.

RIP ME.
cause of death: hot, brooding alien man with trust issues as long as his tail.
this is not just the best of the clecanian series (which was already fantastic), but maybe my favorite sci-fi romance i’ve read to date.
this book tackles sophia’s story, as she finds herself captive in a brutal alien city, ruled over by an even more brutal king with a bad attitude and romantic baggage the size of earth itself. sikthand holds her hostage for bargaining power with the new ruler of tremanta, but soon finds working alongside her could prove even more advantageous for his city. enter: marriage of convenience trope.
not only is this ANGSTY and delicious, it’s also got a plethora of spice and a compelling storyline replete with political scheming and betrayals that made this unputdownable. AND IT'S ALSO LITERALLY POETRY??? some of the quotes from this slayed me. SLAYED ME. the angst, the emotion, the depth. i am changed. (check out the quotes here.)
unequivocally 5 stars — sophia and sikthand are so metal and broody and edgy, it’s a refreshing change from the stories told in this universe, which tend toward softer environments and FMCs — sophia is a badass through and through, and sikthand matches her step for step.
while each of these stories are technically standalones, you might want to read at least the first book in this series (and perhaps the one prior to this — resisting maxu) for some worldbuilding context.

5 Stars
Sikthand... my poor sweet Sikthand just needed love and acceptance and a feeling of safety. Something he hasn't received as the king of a vicious city. Then there's Sophia. His human captive with a backbone of steel. These two my heart pitter patter all the way through this book. These two came together with explosive chemistry, wit, animosity, and curiosity that I absolutely adored. I was on pins and needles for every sweet moment, every stolen glance. Every moment they tried to convince themselves, they weren't falling for one another. It took a while for these two to begin to look at things from the other's perspective, but it was well worth the wait, in my opinion!
I feel like there was a lot more political intrigue in this book than there has been on the others, which really worked well for the storyline and who these two became as a couple. They were genuinely just my favorite! This book did mosey about and was definitely a slowburn, but it really suited the characters through and through. This book is so worth it, and so is the rest of the series!!! I can't wait for the next book!

Dual POV 3rd Person
Alien Male King x Human Female

I have been totally loving this series. But, I feel like the further we move on the higher my expectations become. I totally get where the author was going with this couple dynamic BUT it took slow burn romance and off limits to a whole new level. And to top it off the ending was super rushed compared to the other books. My least favorite out of the series so far.
