My students have been on the edge of their seat with this story! Unfortunately, with the school year being over, we won’t get through the series. But I’ve already had a lot of them ask what the series is so they can check it out at the library over the summer!
Disclaimer: there are some things that I had to talk to my class ahead of time about this book. I would read it ahead of time to make sure it’s age appropriate for your reader(s).
adventurous dark emotional mysterious sad tense fast-paced

The premise of this book series is interesting to me and my 9 year old son, so it’s a winner for me!

Not as good at the first but I’m still super interested in the story and think it’s so poignant in 2024. It started off stupid slow but the ending was p good. Ready to read the next one!

Luke, under the identity of Lee Grant (the dead child of a wealthy Baron) goes to Hendricks school. A student who calls himself Jason makes things difficult for him. Luke meets other Shadow Children and Jason claims to be one of them. In reality, Jason is a plant by the Population Police whose job is to discover and turn in Shadow Children. Luke overhears his conversation with the Population Police and asks Mr. Talbot, Jen’s step-dad for help. Mr. Talbot & the Population Police show up at the school and arrest Jason as the school & Mr. Talbot present falsified documents that show that Jason is a third child (he’s not). Mr. Hendricks, the founder of the school, speaks to Luke and wants to put him in a different school for his safety. He refuses and says that he wants to stay and help out the boys at the school.

This is my second time around reading this series of books. This book is not nearly as faced paced as it's predecessor, but I believe that is an intentional choice by the author. I believe she wants the reader to feel just as caged as Luke Garner feels. For a while in the middle the book gets a little monotonous. I could've done without all of the chapters about Luke going out to his garden and all of that. But the book does really take off shortly after that when Luke discovers the other children in the woods. At time Luke is somewhat unlikeable. This book does not measure up to the first book in the series, "Among The Hidden," but it is still a good read.

A solid nostalgia read. The characters and plot have stood the test of time and I still found myself invested in Luke's story
