The premise of this book is so interesting! In college I took a dystopian literature class and I learned that dystopian literature is a commentary on life as we know it. This series tackles issues like overpopulation, food shortage, corruption, etc., but it's all from a child's perspective.

This was a fantastic sequel to Among the Hidden, and a really well-written children’s book.

In this story, Luke is given a new identity, gets shipped off to a school, and is told to simply blend in, despite that he’s never been to school before. He struggles with finding his classes and is constantly getting bullied. Then one night, he finds out that there’s more kids like him.

I love how fleshed-out all of the characters have been so far in this series. My heart broke so badly for Luke when he was getting bullied, and I loved seeing his character grow. At the start, we see him as this quiet shy kid, and at the end we see him finding his voice.

I’m actually pretty excited to see what happens next to Luke.

This book felt a bit more tame than the first one, but it still had high stakes and emotional bits. Continuing to enjoy this series.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book in the series, but I still liked it enough to read the next one.

For a middle school series, this is good and keeps me wanting to know what's going to happen... On to #3!

At one point, I purchased this entire set used at Half Price Books. I like to binge-read series, reading them one after the other so I can fully appreciate the world while my brain is already used to the world set up in the previous book. Among the Hidden leaves us with Luke getting a temporary ID card so he can enter the world as Lee Grant. He is sent off to a windowless boarding school where guards patrol the hallways, commons spaces, and even the bathrooms. Luke is never alone and he so desperately wants to so he can read the note Mr. Talbot slipped him. When Luke discovers an unlocked door to the outside world, he begins to discover there's more to the other students than what he originally thought.

This was a great sequel to [b:Among the Hidden|227651|Among the Hidden (Shadow Children, #1)|Margaret Peterson Haddix|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388382796l/227651._SX50_.jpg|1210896]. I really enjoyed getting to follow Luke's journey from the first book to his new adventure at Hendricks School for Boys. It was hard to read about how his fellow classmates treated him, but in the end, I was so proud of Luke for standing up for what he believed in and what he knew was right.

This book definitely needs to be read after Among the Hidden. Having read several in the series, it's important to read them in order as the characters grow and gain knowledge about life with the Population Police.
