A captivating read that blends truth with fiction in a mesmerising entrancing way. I read this so quickly it surprised me. I find the scientists intriguing and the embellishments on the truth of their lives makes them into strange mythical beasts. I almost wish they were true? I was so lost in the stories I didn't even pause to think about their veracity until I discussed it with a friend and realised there was no way the author could have known some of what was written. I completely forgot any information I knew about this book before I started reading it.

This book gets such rave reviews. I remember it being on book award lists and even one of Obama’s reading lists a few years ago. I went into this with very high expectations. What I got was the Tucker Carlson of science in book form. I actually actively disliked this book. Not only does the age gap thing really bug me, but this type of blurring between fiction and nonfiction just feels disrespectful. Using actual people in a fictional story for sheer drama. Ugh. This one was NOT my cup of tea.
Not too sure how I feel about it tbh … if you’ve taken like highschool science you’ve probably heard about the discoveries & debates & the historical context, so then what remains is the author’s fictitious elements and style—and although I liked the writing style, I was frequently just like…ok? I felt kind of aimless, I guess. And that’s fine in general but i feel like the author was trying to make like an incisive point about the quote dark side of discovery .. or something
